PORTLAND, Ore. — New transfers
Jordan MacIntosh and
Katie Camarena made a splash in their first races in a Portland State uniform Friday, as they posted a pair of record-breaking performances at the Viking Rust Buster at Westmoreland Park. MacIntosh broke the school record in the men's 6k with a time of 17:58.7, while Camarena followed with a new women's 4k record in 13:47.1.
Â
It's the first time the Vikings have set a record on the men's and women's side of a cross country meet since Julie Pedersen and Andrew Salg set the women's 5k and men's 8k records at the 2010 Big Sky Championships.
Â
It all made for a compelling season opener for the Vikings, who entered the 2021 cross country season with new-found respect. The women's and men's team came in 11th and 14th in the preseason USTFCCCA West Region rankings, the first time the teams have been simultaneously ranked to open a season.
Â
Beyond showing that the Vikings were worthy of those preseason estimations, Friday's meet also proved the Vikings put in work over the summer. Season-opening cross country meets tend to show who did their summer training, and in the Vikings' case, that was essentially the whole team.
Â
Besides MacIntosh, three other Vikings dipped under the old men's 6k record while joining MacIntosh in Friday's top 10.
Keynan Abdi placed three spots behind MacIntosh at sixth overall, while finishing in 18:13.8 to beat the old record of 18:39.45 that Zach Carpenter set at the 2011 Pier Park Invite by more than 25 seconds.
Josh Snyder and
Evan Peters, meanwhile, placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in times of 18:28.0 and 18:29.0, putting them both more than 10 seconds ahead of Carpenter's old record. Snyder also beat his old 6k best from the 2018 Viking Rust Buster by more than a minute Friday.
Â
Sam Lingwall didn't beat the old record, but still moved into the all-time top 10 for the 6k while finishing 11th overall in 18:51.7. Lingwall now ranks seventh all-time in the 6k, while
Luke Ramirez ranks 10th after he finished 13th overall in 19:06.1. Ramirez beat his previous 6k best from the 2019 Rust Buster by 19 seconds Friday.
Â
Dom Morganti, a new transfer from Brown University, rounded out the Vikings' top seventh while placing 15th overall in 19:12.5 in his Viking debut.
Â
Eleven other Vikings competed on the men's side of the Rust Buster Friday, with
Ian Vickstrom and
Chase Lovercheck both setting new 6k personal bests among those. Vickstrom finished as the Vikings' eighth runner at 18th overall, while setting a 20-second personal best with his time of 19:24.1. Lovercheck, meanwhile, followed
Brandon Hippe (19th, 19:39.5) as the Vikings' 10th runner at 22nd overall, while setting a 26-second personal best with his time of 20:08.8.
Â
Behind Lovercheck,
Jake Schulte placed 23rd in 20:15.5, while
Andy Solano (26th, 20:25.1),
Erik Solano (27th, 20:31.8),
Mitchell Tolander (28th, 20:43.6),
Zach Grams (29th, 21:22.6),
James Bottrill (30th, 21:40.5),
Rashid Muse (31st, 22:46.4) and
Zach Salcido (32n, 22:48.0) all placed back-to-back to round out the Vikings' contingent.
Â
On the women's side,
Abi Swain finished as the Vikings' second runner behind Camarena while placing 14th overall in 14:18.2. Swain's time moved her up to fourth all-time in the 4k, just ahead of two-time All-Big Sky runner Sarah Medved.
Hunter Storm and
Tatum Miller also joined their teammates in the all-time top 10 after Friday. Storm now ranks seventh all-time after finishing 16th overall in 14:24.2, setting a new personal best by two-tenths of a second. Miller, meanwhile, slotted into ninth all-time after placing 19th overall in 14:31.2.
Â
Olivia Brooks rounded out the Viking women's top five while placing 21st overall in 14:32.9.
Laura Beghin and
Phoebe Brown followed as the Vikings' sixth and seventh finishers, respectively, while placing 30th and 34th overall in times of 15:13.1 and 15:18.5.
Â
Four other Viking women competed Friday, as
Lottie Bromham (36th, 15:24.7),
Monica Salazar (38th, 15:30.5),
Kynzie DeLeon (42nd, 15:46.2) and
Sophie Jones (44th, 15:52.5) all either made their season or Viking debuts. Salazar's time of 15:30.5 marked a 29-second improvement over her previous 4k best from the 2019 Viking Rust Buster.
Â
The Vikings will now take the next two weekends off before returning to competition for two different meets on Sept. 24. The Vikings will travel to the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, while the rest of the team stays local for the Mike Johnson Classic, hosted by Western Oregon University.
