SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It was a mix of the old and the new for the Portland State cross country program Friday, as the Vikings closed out their season at the NCAA West Regional at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.

Emma Stolte and
Taylor Nichols both recorded their best finishes ever at the NCAA West Regional to represent the Vikings' veterans.
Sam Sharp and
Farhan Ibrahim also posted the best finishes by Viking freshmen on the women's and men's teams since 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Stolte placed 82nd overall to lead the Viking women, finishing the 6k in 21:20.8. She finished 151st overall in her first appearance at regionals last season, making Friday's showing a 69-place improvement for Stolte.

Taylor Nichols improved by even more, finishing 145th overall in 22:15.7 Friday after she was 227th last year.
Â
Sharp followed in 22:49.5, placing 193rd overall for the highest finish by a Viking freshman on the women's team since Maya Irving placed 56th in 2021.

Sophomore
Irina López finished 220th overall in 23:20.3, while freshmen
Sonja Jones and
Riley Amarillas closed it out for the Vikings at 240th and 256th overall, respectively, in times of 23:55.9 and 24:51.5.

Ibrahim led the Viking men, placing 121st overall while finishing his first 10k in 31:49.7. Ibrahim's placement marked the best showing by a freshman on the men's team since Ben Collins placed 56th overall in 2022.

Freshmen accounted for three of the Viking men's top four runners at the NCAA West Regional. Freshman
Ari Smith placed 172nd overall in 33:08.3 as the men's team's second runner. Â Sophomore
Luke Gillingham finished 179th overall in 33:19.1, while freshman
Benjamin Sanchez followed at 181st overall in 33:25.4.

Redshirt senior
Abdinajib Abade – dealing with a hamstring issue that limited the Vikings' usual front runner – closed out the team score for the Viking men while placing 186th overall in 33:51.9.

Senior
Tom Thake also ran for the Vikings, finishing two spots ahead of his finish at last year's regionals while placing 190th overall in 34:03.1 Friday. Â

The Vikings will now turn their attention to the indoor track & field season, which will get underway in January.
