Athletics Title IX Policy

Title IX provides that: “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Gender Equity in Athletics

Title IX applies to intercollegiate athletics to assure there is gender equity in Vikings’ programs, in particular in three specific areas: athletic participation, scholarships and treatment of programs.

Athletic Participation: Based on the Department of Education's Title IX guidance, Portland State University evaluates equitable student-athlete participation based on the percentage of undergraduate women to undergraduate men.

If you would like to request Vikings Athletics to add an additional sport to its intercollegiate program, please complete this form and a Title IX Coordinator will respond to your request.

Scholarships and Treatment: The Gender Equity Evaluation Committee in Athletics assesses equitable treatment and scholarships of its’ athletics programs. Treatment includes the following areas:

Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) Survey

The Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) is designed to make prospective students aware of a school's commitment to providing equitable athletic opportunities for its men and women students. Any co-educational institution of higher education that participates in a federal student aid program must prepare and EADA report by October 15. Institutions must also report data to the U.S. Department of Education via this online survey. This is a mandatory survey.

Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response

Portland State’s Understanding Sexual Misconduct and Resources provides students with information about prohibited conduct as well as resources and reporting options. All student-athletes must complete the Safe Campus Training Module prior to competing in intercollegiate athletics. Additionally, all student-athletes participate in Illuminate prevention programming.

All Portland State student-athletes have a right to participate in their athletic program free of discrimination, sexual harassment (including sexual assaults) and retaliation. This includes concerns of student to student discrimination or harassment or student to employee (faculty & staff).  The Printable Resource Document provides information on how to report discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliation and also provides confidential resources.
