BOZEMAN, Mont. — The All-Big Sky plaque that Portland State's
Emma Stolte earned with a ninth-place individual finish Saturday at the Big Sky Cross Country Championships won't have a long way to travel to her parents' mantel piece.
Â
Stolte's hometown of Townsend, Mont., is only an hour's drive away from Bridger Creek Golf Course in Bozeman, where Saturday's race took place.
Â
We'd forgive Stolte if she wants to hold onto that piece of hardware for a while, though. It was the latest in a run of five straight top 10 finishes for Stolte this season that included three top five finishes and the individual win at the Ash Creek Festival on Sept. 12. Stolte's five top 10 finishes ties Amber Rozcicha in 2012 and Melissa Telford in 1999 for the most in a single season by a Viking, male or female.
Â
Stolte also joined Telford as one of only eight Vikings – male or female – to earn All-Big Sky honors. Stolte was the first Viking to finish in the top 10 at the conference championships since Katie Camarena placed a program-record fourth in 2021.
Â
Stolte stayed in the top 10 throughout Saturday's race, as part of the chase pack behind the lead group of five or six runners. Stolte finished the 5k in 16:56.9, 12 seconds ahead of the No. 10 finisher, Weber State's Audrey Camp Cazier in 17:08.3.
Â
Stolte's time of 16:56.9 represents a 25-second personal best, a remarkable feat considering her previous best was at sea level while Saturday's race took place at 4,800 feet of elevation. Stolte's time is the best ever by a Viking at 4,000 feet of elevation or above, beating Sarah Dean's time of 17:16.20 at the 2013 Big Sky Championships by 20 seconds. It also moves her up to third all-time in the 5k at Portland State across all conditions.
Â
The Portland State men recorded their highest team finish since 2022, placing eighth with 244 team points. The Vikings edged Northern Colorado for eighth in the standings by three points, as their second through fifth finishers all placed in front of their counterparts for the Bears.
Â
Senior
Abdinajib Abade led the way with a 43rd-place finish in the 8k, crossing the line in 25:59.7. Abade jumped 15 spots between the first- and third-mile splits, before settling into his spot in the low 40s. Abade's time of 25:59.7 represented the program's ninth-best 8k time at 4,000 feet of elevation or above.
Â
A group of three freshmen followed Abade for the Viking men.
Farhan Ibrahim, finished just four spots back of Abade at 47th overall in 26:12.8.
Ari Smith placed 56th in 26:42.4, while
Benjamin Sanchez followed at 63rd overall in 27:11.6.
Â
Senior
Tom Thake led the second half of the Viking's lineup at 74th overall in 27:56.1.
Luke Gillingham,
Vince Estrada and
Amir Ahmed followed Thake at 76th, 77th and 78th overall, respectively. Gillingham finished in 28:07.5, while Estrada and Ahmed crossed in 28:21.4 and 28:32.3.
Â
Sophomore
Landen Sandoval closed out the Viking men's runners at 81st overall in 29:01.7.
Â
The Viking women placed 10th as a team with 243 total points. Three of the seven runners behind Stolte set either personal or collegiate bests.
Â
Taylor Nichols placed 42nd overall as the Vikings' second runner, finishing in 18:09.2. That was a 10-second personal best for Nichols over her time at the Lewis & Clark Opener on Aug. 29 earlier this season.
Â
The rest of the Viking women placed in the 70s or higher. Freshmen
Sam Sharp and
Sonja Jones finished 71st and 72nd, respectively, in times of 18:53.0 and 19:04.3. Jones' time represented a new collegiate best in the 5k over time at the Charles Bowles Invitational.
Â
Sophomore
Irina López and freshmen
Riley Amarillas and
Libby Fox finished back-to-back-to-back at 77th, 78th and 79th, respectively. López finished in 19:36.8, while Amarillas and Fox finished in 19:48.6 and 19:50.7. Amarillas shaved 18 seconds off her 5k personal best with her finish.
Â
Emily Schmitke rounded out the Viking women's runners with an 83rd-place finish in 20:14.1.
Â
The Vikings will close out their season at the NCAA West Regional, Nov. 14, at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.
