PORTLAND, Ore. — The Viking Rust Buster, which the Portland State cross country program hosted for the fourth time out of the past five seasons Friday, has always come before the Vikings set goals for the year. Those come at the program's annual retreat, which the Vikings left for immediately following Friday's race at Westmoreland Park.
Still, the Rust Buster informs what the Vikings set down as their goals for the year, and Friday did nothing to dissuade the Vikings from aiming high during the 2022 cross country season.
Even without their full complement of runners, the Viking women swept the individual and team titles Friday, the first time they had won either since they first hosted the meet in 2018.
Tatum Miller claimed the individual crown in the women's 5k, becoming the first Viking (man or woman) to win an individual race at the Rust Buster.
Keynan Abdi would have owned the highest finish ever by a Viking at the Rust Buster if not for Miller, as he placed second in the men's 6k before Miller ran in the women's race. The Viking men followed suit behind Abdi, placing second as a team behind the University of Portland in first.
The strong season opener from Miller wouldn't have surprised head coach
David Hepburn, who said Miller has stood out in the early season as someone who has staked out a leadership role on the women's team. Miller ran with UP's Abby Lawrence and Courtney Klatt during the early part of Friday's 5k, but claimed a 20-meter lead with a kilometer to go and held on for an eight-second win in 17:51.5.
Three other Vikings followed Miller in the top 10, including two in the top five as
Jamie Zamrin and
Sammy Burke placed back-to-back at fourth and fifth, respectively. Zamrin, who finished in 18;44.8, was running her first race as a Viking after transferring to Portland State from Lehigh. Burke (18:47.9), meanwhile, made a long-awaited return to cross country after not competing since she was a freshman in 2018 due to a combination of injuries and the pandemic.
Phoebe Brown gave the Vikings a fourth top-10 finisher, as she recorded her best finish ever at the Rust Buster while placing ninth overall in a time of 19:07.1.
Abi Swain closed out the team score with an 18th-place finish in 19:26.7, giving the Vikings 31 team points – 12 ahead of Seattle U in second and 20 ahead of the University of Portland in third.
Natalia Martino finished right behind Swain at 19th overall in 19:35.4.
Abby Donde and
Emma Owen also finished back-to-back at 25th (20:19.7) and 26th (20:23.4), respectively, as did
Sophie Jones and
Dyllan Newville at 33rd (21:30.3) and 34th (21:41.2). Additionally,
Cheyenne Abbett placed 37th overall in a time of 22:36.5 Friday.
Abdi, like Miller, ran amongst the leaders throughout Friday's Rust Buster, before placing second overall in 18:39.26 for his best finish ever at the Rust Buster. Abdi placed sixth at the Rust Buster last year, and while his time was better the year before, Friday's second-place finish was the best ever by a Viking men's runner, bettering
Jordan MacIntosh's third-place finish a year ago.
A mix of returners and newcomers followed behind Abdi.
Josh Jarpey, one of the Vikings' senior transfers, joined Abdi in the top 10 while placing ninth overall in 19:05.39.
Sam Lingwall and
Ben Drew followed just behind Jarpey, placing 12th and 13th overall, respectively, in nearly identical times of 19:09.77 and 19:09.84.
Zach Grams was fifth across the line for the Vikings, placing right behind Lingwall and Drew at 14th overall in a time of 19:15.13. Grams' finish rounded out the Vikings team score at 42 points, 23 behind first-place UP (19 points) and 46 points ahead of third-place Seattle (88 points).
Additionally, Grams' time gave him the biggest improvement of any Viking over their performance a year ago at last season's Rust Buster. Grams finished 29th overall at the 2021 edition of the race, while his time of 21:22.6 last year was more than two minutes behind his performance Friday.
Ben Vanderbosch, another of the Vikings' senior transfers, also set a new personal best in the 6k while finishing 18th overall in 19:22.92. The time shaved 16.5 seconds off Vanderbosch's previous best in the 6k, which he set at the Clash of the Inland Northwest last season when he was still running for Montana.
Cam McChesney followed a second and a half behind Vanderbosch, placing 19th overall in 19:24.45.
Alex Solberg, who ran unattached all of last season, made his official debut as a Viking Friday, placing 26th overall in 20:11.23.
Luke Ramirez followed two spots behind Solberg in 28th while finishing in a time of 20:23.70.
Aiden Carlson and
Pat Roos also ran their first cross country races as Vikings Friday, placing 35th and 38th overall, respectively, in times of 21:05.21 and 21:24.12.
Jake Schulte followed Carlson and Roos at 42nd overall in 21:52.05, while the middle-distance duo of
Zach Salcido and
Rashid Muse closed out the Viking men's contingent at 45th and 47th overall, respectively. Both Salcido and Muse set new personal bests over their 6k times at last year's Rust Buster. Salcido shaved 35 seconds off his time a year ago while finishing in 22:12.94, while Muse knocked close to 23 seconds off his previous best with a finish in 22:23.62.
The Vikings now head off the grid for their team retreat over the next four days. Once they get back – with new goals and team captains set – the Vikings will turn their attention to the rest of their 2022 season, starting with the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., on Sept. 23.
But whatever follows this season for the Vikings, it'll have been informed or prefaced by what happened Friday at the Rust Buster.
