SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Portland State cross country program wrapped up its 2023 season at the NCAA West Regional Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The Viking men placed 27th overall, while the women were 32nd.
Â
Both teams fought through a highly competitive field while being short-handed. The Vikings men raced with the minimum five runners required to complete a team score, while the women only had one more runner than that with six active on their side. What's more, out of those 11 runners, only two –
Abi Swain and
Jamie Zamrin on the women's side – had raced at the NCAA West Regional before.
Â
Despite that, the Vikings still managed to beat a few teams on either side of the race.
Â
Not only was the men's team completely new to the regional setting, none of the five had ever run a cross country 10k before, which was the distance of Friday's race.
Zach Grams and
Abdi Ibrahim have a few 10k's under their belts on the track, at least, and they led the Vikings at 110th and 126h overall, respectively. Grams finished in 31:26.6, which was only 11 seconds slower than his best 10k on the track. Ibrahim was only 24 seconds slower than his best track 10k on while finishing in 31:45.4.
Â
Abdinajib Abade finished as the Vikings' third runner at 166th overall in 32:55.1. He moved up the most within the field during the race, as he was 188th overall after the first mile before passing 22 runners over the rest of the race.
Â
Freshman
Lyness Ota passed runners himself, going from 199th after the first mile to 192nd by the end while finishing his first-ever 10k in 35:13.1.
Â
Fellow freshman
Amir Ahmed closed out the team score at 201st overall in 38:21.8.
Â
The women raced a more familiar distance in a 6k, but also battled an even deeper field with 253 finishers (52 more than the men) and 37 teams (eight more than the men).
Â
Zamrin led the Viking women at 102nd overall, 29 spots better than her finish at last year's NCAA West Regional. Zamrin finished in 21:13.0, her second-best 6k time ever after her time of 21:05.6 at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational last month.
Â
Laura Beghin had the biggest movement throughout the race of any Viking, male or female. Beghin moved up 43 spots between the 1.5-mile split and the end of the race. She passed 23 runners between the 1.5- and 2.5-mile splits alone. The big movement saw Beghin finish second in the Vikings' lineup – her highest finish of the season – and place 143rd overall in 21:50.7, seven seconds faster than her previous best in the 6k.
Â
Abi Swain finished third in the Vikings' lineup at 193rd overall in 22:29.4.
Taylor Nichols and
Peyten Woodruff rounded out the team score at 226th and 235th overall in 23:23.2 and 23:43.2, respectively.
Campbell Faust followed at 249th overall in 24:26.4.
Â
Friday's race represents the end of the cross country season for the Vikings. Some of the Vikings will transition quickly to the indoor track season, as the team heads to Boston University for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Dec. 2.
Â
The rest of the Vikings will make their indoor debuts in 2024 at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13.
