SALEM, Ore. — Emil Zátopek, the legendary Czech Olympian who won three Gold Medals at the 1952 Helsinki games, took Gold in his debut attempt in the marathon at those same Olympic Games.
Bára Stýblová, a newcomer from Hlásná Treban, Czech Republic, pulled off a similar winning debut as her countryman Saturday, as she claimed the individual title in the women's 5k at the Charles Bowles Invitational.
Stýblová, running her first race in a Viking uniform, became the first Viking since Amanda Boman in 2015 to win an individual race at the Charles Bowles Invitational. She joins Boman, Amber Rozcicha in 2012 and Melissa Telford in 1999 as the only four Vikings to win races at the meet during the program's Division I history (records are incomplete before then).
The winning debut provided a clear highlight for the Vikings Saturday. Head coach
David Hepburn rested his runners that competed a week ago at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, leaving the Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park the domain of runners like Stýblová, who either hadn't yet run for the Vikings this season, or hadn't run since the Viking Rust Buster on Sept. 2, which was before they started training for the year.
Few had as strong of debuts as Stýblová, of course. The Viking women placed fifth with 117 points as a team behind Stýblová's individual win. The men, meanwhile, placed ninth with 235 points as a team, with
Alex Solberg leading them at 21st overall.
Stýblová won by more than four seconds over Hannah Hartwell from the College of the Redwoods, and crossed the line more than 30 seconds ahead of the No. 3 finisher, Hawaii's Caelan Miller. Stýblová finished in a time of 17:31.3 while Hartwell and Miller followed in 17:35.9 and 18:02.3, respectively.
Sammy Burke led the next wave of Vikings across the line, as she placed 25th overall in 18:50.2.
Laura Beghin, who like Stýblová was running her first race of the season, followed three spots behind Burke at 28th overall in 18:57.4.
Jalen Marcil finished 40th overall in 19:18.7, as she made her return to competition just a week after pulling out of the Bill Dellinger Invitational for preventative measures.
Sophie Jones followed her as she closed out the team's top five with a 46th-place finish in 19:26.2.
Dyllan Newville and
Cheyenne Abbett finished as the team's sixth and seventh runners, respectively, as both of them ran their first races since the Viking Rust Buster at the beginning of the season. Newville finished 74th overall in 20:14.9 – close to 90 seconds faster than her time at the Rust Buster four weeks earlier. Abbett improved on her time at the Rust Buster, as well, as she shaved 75 seconds off her previous time while placing 101st overall in 21:21.2.
Only five runners raced in a jersey for the Vikings in the men's 8k. None of the five had run an 8k earlier this season, as the Viking men ran a 6k at the Rust Buster and no one competing Saturday ran at the Bill Dellinger Invitational last week. For Solberg, who redshirted his freshman season in 2021, that meant he was running his first official cross country 8k, which he finished 21st overall in 25:06.2.
Pat Roos, a middle-distance runner during the track season, had run a cross country 8k before when he was at Minnesota, but finished his first as a Viking 61st overall in 26:18.0.
Jake Schulte followed five spots back of Roos at 66th overall in 26:25.8, shaving 35 seconds off his personal best at the distance.
Abdi Ibrahim placed 97th overall in 27:23.9, while
Stirling Marshall-Pryde rounded out the Vikings' contingent at 112th overall in 27:40.4. Marshall-Pryde was making his Viking debut at the meet, as he redshirted the cross country, indoor and outdoor seasons during the 2021-22 school year.
The Vikings take next weekend off from competition before they return for two different meets on Saturday, Oct. 15. Half the team will head to the Weis-Crockett Invitational in Stillwater, Okla., which will double as the pre-national meet this season. The rest of the team will compete at the L&C Invite at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Ore.
