SANTA CLARA, Calif. — With the Big Sky Championships coming up on their home course in less than two weeks, the Portland State cross country teams gave a little tease of the fireworks to come. The fireworks at Saturday's Santa Clara Bronco Invitational came in the form of a men's team win – over two other regionally ranked teams, no less – a school record in the women's 6k, and nine top 10 marks between both sides of the race.
Not bad for an opening act.
Josh Snyder,
Jordan MacIntosh and
Keynan Abdi led the Viking men to their team win Saturday at Baylands Regional Park. The trio all dipped under 24 minutes in the 8k for the first time in their careers while finishing second, third and fifth, respectively, in times of 23:40.9, 23:43.9 and 23:47.1. Only five Vikings had ever run faster than 24 minutes in the 8k before Saturday, and only one of those (Alex Cisneros at the 2017 Bronco Invite) did it outside of a questionably distanced 2010 Big Sky meet.
Snyder, MacIntosh and Abdi led the Viking men to a dominant team win, as the Vikings won with 67 team points – 37 points better than the second-place team at the meet, Cal Poly. The Cal Poly Mustangs came into the meet ranked 10th in the USTFCCCA West Region – two spots ahead of the Vikings – while Portland State also blew the doors off of No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, which placed third with 109 points.
Katie Camarena, meanwhile, absolutely crushed the old record in the women's 6k, beating it by close to 48 seconds while finishing third overall in 20:00.4. To put Camarena's time in context, only four Vikings had ever cracked 21 minutes in the 6k before Saturday, and yet Camarena came within a few tenths of a second of cracking 20 minutes.
Maya Irving and
Hunter Storm also went under the old 6k record of 20:48.1, as they finished seventh and 11th, respectively, in times 20:37.8 and 20:46.8.
The entire women's top five, in fact, entered the all-time top 10 in the 6k after Saturday, as
Liza Sajn and
Abi Swain finished 17th and 23rd, respectively, in times of 20:54.6 and 21:05.5. Sajn became just the seventh runner ever to crack 21 minutes in the women's 6k, and did it as a freshman, while moving up to sixth all-time at the distance. Swain moved up to eighth all-time, meanwhile, after running the first collegiate 6k of her career.
The five top 10 finishes led the Viking women to a second-place team finish, as San Francisco – the 10th-ranked team in the USTFCCCA West Region – edged them with 46 points to the Vikings' 59. The Viking men had already raced their 8k by that point, meaning a win for the women would have marked the program's first team sweep since the 2013 Oak Knoll Loop Run, and the first-ever sweep at a Division I meet, since meet-by-meet records started to be kept in 1999.
Still, the Vikings enjoyed the potential of a team sweep after the men dominated in the opening race of the day. Like the women, the men also had a number of runners enter the all-time top 10 at their distance (the 8k). Snyder, MacIntosh and Abdi moved up to third, fourth and sixth all-time, respectively, after cracking 24 minutes for the first time Saturday. Besides those three,
Luke Ramirez moved up to 10th all-time while finishing as the Vikings' fourth runner at 28th overall in 24:23.4.
Ramirez's time represented a new personal best by more than a minute, which was a theme for both Viking teams Saturday. Of the team's eight runners, seven set new 8k personal bests at the meet. Ramirez was one of three who set a new personal best by more than a minute, with Snyder and
Evan Peters joining him. Peters, who finished as the Vikings' fifth runner at 33rd overall, shaved 70 seconds off his old 8k best while finishing in 24:30.0. Snyder claimed the rights to the biggest personal best of the day, as he shaved 84 seconds off his previous best, which he set at the 2019 Bronco Invitational as a sophomore.
Ian Vickstrom nearly gave the Vikings a fourth PB of more than a minute, but will still be happy with the 56-second personal best he set while finishing 47th overall in 24:50.9.
MacIntosh and Abdi set personal bests of 37 and 42 seconds, respectively, while finishing near the top of the team's lineup. The runner who overcame the most adversity to set a PB Saturday, however, was likely
Drew Seidel. The veteran runner has fought back from a debilitating back injury that left him considering a medical retirement, but got a tangible reward for his perseverance Saturday while setting a six-second personal best with his finish in 24:33.0. That beat his time of 24:39.0 from three years ago at the 2018 Bronco Invite, when he was the Vikings' top freshman.
All seven of the Viking women also set personal bests in the 6k Saturday. Camarena dipped under her old 6k best by 11 seconds, while Storm beat her old time from the 2019 Bronco Invitational by five seconds.
The rest of the Viking women either set their 6k personal bests three weeks ago on a hilly Roy Griak Invitational course, or were running their first-ever 6k, in the case of Swain. The best sign of just how hilly the Griak course was came in the fact that Irving, Sajn,
Tatum Miller and
Natalia Martino all beat their 6k times from the Griak by more than a minute Saturday.
Irving, Sajn and Martino all finished more than 90 seconds ahead of their times at Griak. Irving and Sajn both knocked around 97 seconds off their times from three weeks ago while crossing the line in 20:37.8 and 20:54.6, respectively. Martino shaved 93 seconds off her time at Griak, while finishing 31st overall in 21:27.9.
Miller finished 76 seconds ahead of her time at Griak while placing 30th overall in 21:27.4.
It all leads-in well to the postseason stretch for the Vikings, which officially opens Oct. 29 with the Big Sky Championships at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro, Ore. The Vikings will want to show out at their first home conference meet since 2018. And judging by Saturday, they're ready.

ESTACADA, Ore. — Apologies to the namesake of the Mike Johnson Classic, but the Portland State cross country programs kicked the Mike Johnson Classic's ass Saturday. Of the nine Vikings who competed at the meet three weeks ago, all nine beat their times while competing at the L&C Invite at Milo McIver State Park.
Out of the nine who beat their times from three weeks ago, five did so by at least 60 seconds while three of those five did so by more than 90 seconds.
The improvements helped lead the Viking women to fourth-place team finish with 128 points, despite half of the team competing at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational earlier in the day Saturday.
Five of the six Viking women who had run 6,000-meter races before Saturday, set a new personal best. The one exception was
Phoebe Brown, who came within four-tenths of a second of the personal best she set at the 2019 NCAA West Regional. Brown led the Viking women with an 11th-place finish Saturday, as she crossed the line in 21:58.5.
Monica Salazar followed Brown at 28th overall in 22:41.7, beating the time she set at the Mike Johnson Classic – which was close to a 90-second personal best at the time – by just under six seconds.
Sophie Jones set a 25-second personal best while finishing 31st overall in 22:48.3, 68 seconds faster than her time at the Mike Johnson Classic.
Sophia Hackett ran her first 6k at the Mike Johnson Classic, making it simple for her to know her time to beat, which she did by 34 seconds while finishing 53rd overall in 23:13.3.
Lottie Bromham placed 59th while finishing her first 6k in 23:18.7.
Kynzie DeLeon and
Campbell Faust improved by 45 and 62 seconds over their times at the Mike Johnson Classic, respectively, while finishing 83rd in 23:41.6 and 91st in 23:54.9.
The Viking men only had five runners compete Saturday, but placed eighth as a team with 256 points after making big improvements over three weeks ago.
Brandon Hippe led the Viking men with a 21-second personal best in the 8k, finishing 40th overall in 25:05.2 – 102 seconds faster than his time at the Mike Johnson Classic.
Kelly Shedd followed at 56th overall in 25:27.1, while Erik and
Andy Solano finished at 94th and 106th, respectively, in times of 26:10.2 and 26:21.7.
Erik Solano's time marked a 128-second improvement over his time three weeks ago, while
Andy Solano beat his time at the Mike Johnson Classic by 91 seconds.
Zach Grams, like Shedd, didn't have a recorded 8k time before Saturday, but finished 108th overall in 26:23.6 at the L&C Invite.
