CORVALLIS, Ore. — Saturday's second day of the OSU High Performance Meet marked the regular-season finale for the Portland State track & field program. So given one last chance to impress before they host the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 13-16, at Mt. Hood Community College, the Vikings were sure to impress.
Â
Isaiah Cadengo and
Emma Stolte took the lead in that regard, setting a pair of overall top 10 marks at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Â
Cadengo punctuated the regular season with a breakout showing in the men's 400 meters. Hampered by injuries at times this season, Cadengo appeared to shake those off, delivering an overall win for the Vikings with a finish in 47.60 seconds. The time represented a seasonal best by close to seven-tenths of a second, while he beat his nearest competitor by more than three-quarters of a second.
Â
Cadengo already owned the freshman record in the 400 but is now nearly a full second clear of the No. 2 mark in the freshman record book. Additionally, Saturday's time moved him up to third all-time overall, just 0.22 seconds behind the current school record of 47.38 seconds that Anthony Robinson set in 2003.
Â
Stolte has been no stranger to the Viking record book this season. Already having broken three school records, she was attempting to add a fourth in the women's 800 meters Saturday. She missed out on that but still moved up to third all-time in the event with her finish in 2:10.06.
Â
Norhan Abdel Halim and
Ari Smith, meanwhile, joined Cadengo in setting freshman top 10 marks Saturday. Abdel Halim moved up to 10th in the freshman top 10 for the women's 400 meters while shaving four-tenths of a second off her personal best with her finish in 1:00.23.
Â
Smith led a strong showing overall from the Vikings in the men's 800 meters. Smith was one of seven Vikings to set either an overall or collegiate best in the open sections of the men's 800 meters. The freshman placed second overall – a tenth of a second behind Kai Martland from the University of British Columbia – while shaving half a second off his personal best with a finish in 1:53.07. Smith now ranks fifth in the freshman top 10.
Â
Vince Estrada added one of the other personal bests in the 800 meters while winning his heat by seven-tenths of a second in 1:57.51.
Aidan Brown dipped under two minutes for the first time as a Viking, finishing in 1:59.16.
Luis Muradas (2:00.00),
Ian Parks (2:00.24),
Simon Walsh (2:03.84) and
Kyle Chen (2:04.54) followed with personal bests of their own, all by at least a second.
Â
Amir Ahmed posted the fastest 800-meter time of the day for the Viking men while competing in the invitational section of the event. Ahmed finished in 1:52.80 for his second-best mark of the season.
Â
Three of the five Vikings competing in the open section of the women's 800 meters also bettered personal or seasonal bests.
Taylor Nichols led that group with her finish in 2:17.77, shaving six-hundredths of a second off the mark she set on the same track at the PNW Invite on March 21.
Emily Schmitke shaved three-hundredths of a second off her seasonal best with a finish in 2:27.22.
Shayda Zarrin bettered a three-year-old personal best from her time at Santa Clara while finishing in 2:27.96.
Â
Three of five Vikings also bettered personal or seasonal bests in the women's 100 meters.
Ashley Peterson led that group with a finish in 12.49 seconds, shaving nearly three-tenths of a second off a time she set in the team's season opener at the LCC Open on March 14.
Sienna Rosario – returning to competition for the first time since the PNW Invite in March – shaved four-hundredths of a second off her seasonal best while finishing in 12.51 seconds.
Savannah Beasley followed in 12.63 seconds, shaving two-hundredths of a second off her personal best from the LCC Open.
Â
The open 100 meters came after Beasley ran her second-best time in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished sixth overall in the hurdles in 15.07 seconds, just eight-hundredths of a second behind the personal best she set two weeks ago at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Â
Ocean Rideout followed Beasley with a personal best of 16.15 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. That was half a second better than the mark she set three weeks ago at the John Knight Twilight. Rideout also bettered the personal best she set in the high jump at the John Knight Twilight earlier in the day. Rideout cleared on her third attempts at 1.47 and 1.52 meters before missing on all three attempts at 1.57 meters. Her clearance at 4-11.75 (1.52m) put her three-quarters of an inch higher than her previous best.
Â
Aidan Sweeney set personal bests in the open 100 meters as well as the 110-meter hurdles. Sweeney cracked 15 seconds for the first time in the 110 hurdles, dipping just under the mark with a finish in 14.99 seconds. He had been chasing the barrier breaker for a while, having set his previous best at 15.10 seconds at the Stanford Invitational four weeks ago. Sweeney then capped the day with a personal best of 11.09 seconds in the open 100 meters.
Â
Jack Macdonald – the Vikings' hero Friday when he broke a 27-year-old mark in the 200 meters – nearly provided another highlight Saturday. Macdonald came within one-hundredth of a second of the personal best he set in the 100 meters at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate while finishing in 10.63 seconds. His personal best of 10.62 seconds ranks him fifth all-time.
Â
Three more standout showings for the Vikings came from the field events.
Henry Glad made a big jump in the men's javelin, adding seven feet, eight inches to his personal best with an opening throw of 186-07 (56.89). Glad had two more throws over 185 feet, either of which would have marked a new personal best if not for his opener.
Â
Jackson Mathers added a personal best from the men's triple jump. Mathers jumped 45-11.25 (14.00m), five inches past his previous best from the John Knight Twilight.
Â
Natalie Fisher, meanwhile, posted her best mark in six meets in the women's shot put. Fisher, who broke the freshman record in the shot put indoors, threw 38-11.75 (11.88m). That was her best mark since she set her outdoor best at 39-01.75 (11.93m) at the Willamette Invitational on March 28.
Â
The Vikings will now take next week off from competition before the conference comes to them for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 13-16. Saturday's regular-season finale will have no bearing on that conference meet. But it did give the Vikings a chance to lay the groundwork of what's to come.
