Historic Season Comes to End in NCAA West First Round for Emma Stolte

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Running with the leaders through the first two laps of her heat in the women's 1,500 meters – the fastest two opening laps of the day, no less – Emma Stolte gave herself a chance to extend her historic season Thursday at the NCAA West First Round.

But those quick opening two laps took their toll as Stolte placed 10th in her heat and 35th overall in 4:23.19.

It was always going to be a tall task for Stolte to advance. Only the top five in each heat – plus the next four-best times – advance to Saturday's quarterfinals at the University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field. Additionally, Stolte – even with her school record of 4:20.17 at the Bryan Clay Invitational – came into the meet ranked last in a field that featured ten runners with seasonal bests under 4:10. Four of those 10 runners were in Stolte's heat.

The finish doesn't diminish Stolte's accomplishments this season, however. She was only the third Viking ever to qualify for the NCAA West First Round in the 1,500 meters, and the first since 2013.

The qualification came after Stolte put together the best performance by a Viking at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships since 2017. Stolte won the Vikings' first-ever title in the outdoor 5k while also placing second in the 1,500 meters. Her 18 points between both events represented the most by an individual Viking since Genna Settle scored 20 in 2017.

The 1,500-meter school record, meanwhile, came as one of three records Stolte set between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Each time, Stolte bettered one of the best marks in the record book, either because of who previously set the record or how long it had stood. She bettered the record of two-time NCAA second-team All-American Katie Camarena in the indoor 800 meters with her finish in 2:08.51 at the Inland Northwest Invitational. Outdoors, she bettered a 12-year-old mark in the 1,500 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational, a day after she broke a 39-year-old mark in the 5k (15:59.87) that 11-time NCAA Division II All-American Debbie Myra set back in 1987.

The standout track season came after Stolte tied a program record with five top 10 finishes during the fall cross country season. One of the top 10 finishes came at the Big Sky Championships, making Stolte one of only eight Vikings historically to earn All-Big Sky honors in cross country.

Thursday's finale moved Stolte's historic season out of the present and into the past. It's now up to the next Viking to try to match her.
