SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — An 800-meter run would get you less than a third of the way over the 1.7-mile-long Golden Gate Bridge. But set up a relay among the Portland State track & field program, and the Vikings will get you over San Francisco's crown jewel in a hurry.
The bridge lies about 10 miles from Cox Stadium where the Vikings put on an 800-meter showcase Saturday at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
Irina López and
Ari Smith combined to give the Vikings two heat winners. Smith also joined fellow freshmen
Hannah Butterfield and
JD Arthur to give the Vikings three freshman top 10 marks across the women's and men's 800 meters.
López won her heat of the women's 800 meters by close to half a second. She beat Biola's Bethany Maples for the win, finishing in 2:12.93. That marked López's second straight personal best in the 800 meters, as she shaved 0.65 seconds off the time she set two weeks ago at the PNW Invite.
Butterfield nearly gave the Viking women a second heat win. She finished two-tenths of a second behind Erick Dorn of San Mateo while shaving 1.7 seconds off her personal best with her finish in 2:15.16. Butterfield now ranks seventh in the freshman record book in the 800 meters.
Smith won his heat of the men's 800 meters by three-quarters of a second over California Baptist's Joshua Griffin. Smith won in 1:53.62, setting a new personal best by more than half a second and moving up to seventh in the freshman top 10.
Arthur entered the freshman record book at 10th while shaving 0.17 seconds off his collegiate best with his finish in 1:55.65. He placed third in his heat.
Amir Ahmed posted the top time for the Viking men, finishing in 1:53.20 while placing fifth in his heat.
The Vikings will be back in action next week at the John Knight Twilight, April 10-11, in Monmouth, Ore. They'll return to California the following week, April 16-18, for the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Pacific Coast Invitational.

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Portland State track & field program jumped to the other side of the Stanford-Cal rivalry, going from the Stanford Invitational Friday to the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Saturday.
Their loyalty in the rivalry was more questionable than the Stanford band during the infamous 1982 end to the football game between the two schools, nicknamed
The Play. No one will hold them to it, though, as the Vikings sought more reps against quality competition at Cal's Edwards Stadium.
Jack Macdonald, who made the jump from Stanford Friday to Cal Saturday, took advantage. He followed up a freshman record in the 100 meters Friday (10.72 seconds), with a third-place finish in the 200 meters Saturday. Macdonald finished in 21.57 seconds, which isn't better than his personal best of 21.46 seconds – also a freshman record – but still gave him the heat win by a tenth of a second.
Zach Payne (22.28),
Isaiah Cadengo (22.34) and
Dillon Brost (22.42) followed Macdonald in the men's 200 meters. Brost's time represented a seasonal best by 0.13 seconds.
Princess Fletcher improved her own mark within the freshman record book in the women's discus. Fletcher added 15 inches to the personal best she set last week, throwing 125-11 (38.39m) on her opening attempt of the day. She moved up one spot to seventh in the freshman record book as a result.
The rest of the Vikings capitalized on the higher-quality competition to improve their marks Saturday.
Savannah Beasley set personal bests in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, bettering her times from the LCC Open on March 14 in both cases. Beasley shaved five-hundredths of a second off her best in the 100-meter hurdles while finishing in 15.41 seconds. Her bigger improvement came in the 400 hurdles, though, as she shaved 1.25 seconds off her previous time while finishing in 1:04.52.
Ocean Rideout set and tied her personal bests in the 100 meters and long jump, respectively. She and
Olivia Jolivette finished in 12.36 and 12.49 seconds, respectively, in the 100 meters. She then tied her best in the long jump, placing fifth with a mark of 18-00.50 (5.50m). She hit the mark on her final of six attempts, just as she did when she initially set it at the PNW Invite on March 21.
Ashley Peterson lowered her seasonal best in the 400 meters to 58.06 seconds. She and Jolivette also finished within a hundredth of a second of each other in the 200 meters in 25.99 and 26.00 seconds, respectively.
Elsewhere,
Henry Glad doubled back in the men's javelin after competing Friday at Stanford. Glad improved by nearly five feet from his mark at Stanford, placing third Saturday with a throw of 173-08 (52.95m). That was Glad's third time over 170 feet this season, something he only did twice last year.
Avonlea Edwards also set her second-best mark in the hammer, throwing 145-04 (44.31m) on her opening attempt of the day.
The Vikings will be back in action next week at the John Knight Twilight, April 10-11, in Monmouth, Ore. They'll return to California the following week for the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Pacific Coast Invitational.
