Hannah Butterfield Leads Rainy Day at John Knight Twilight with Freshman Top 10 Mark in 400 Meters

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Between lightning Friday and a constant rain Saturday, the weather didn't cooperate for the Portland State track & field team this weekend at the John Knight Twilight. The Vikings competed through it all, though, overcoming a wet track to produce some highlights as they closed out the meet at McArthur Field.

Hannah Butterfield provided a freshman top 10 mark for the Vikings in the women's 400 meters. Butterfield placed third overall in 58.75 seconds, shaving nearly three-quarters of a second off her previous best, which came two weeks ago at the Willamette Invitational. She remains seventh in the 400 meters within the freshman record book.

Ashley Peterson and Savannah Beasley followed Butterfield in 59.07 and 59.23 seconds, respectively. The three of them joined Norhan Abdel Halim on the women's 4x400-meter relay at the end of the meet, as the Vikings shaved three seconds off their seasonal best with a finish in 4:05.07.

JD Arthur and Ari Smith produced two personal bests on the men's side of the 400 meters, finishing in 52.44 and 52.46 seconds, respectively. Smith then joined Zach Payne, Jack Macdonald and Dillon Brost on the men's 4x400-meter relay that set its own seasonal best with its finish in 3:23.50.

The busiest athlete of the day was undoubtedly Ocean Rideout. The converted soccer player showed her multiple talents while competing in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and 800 meters. And that was after setting a personal best in the 200 meters Friday.

Out of her three events Saturday, Rideout had only competed in the 100 hurdles before, and even then, she had only done it once. Rideout bettered that previous mark in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 16.69 seconds. Her first-ever attempts in the high jump and 800 meters, meanwhile, resulted in a clearance at 4-11.00 (1.50m) and a time of 2:39.67, respectively. Rideout cleared three bars in the high jump, going over on her first attempts at 1.40 and 1.45 meters while going over on her second attempt at 1.50 meters.

Emily Schmitke and Riley Amarillas led a group of five Vikings that included Rideout in the women's 800 meters. They set a pair of seasonal bests while finishing in 2:27.25 and 2:32.72, respectively.

Luke Gillingham and Vince Estrada led the Viking men in the 800 meters with their finishes in 1:59.65 and 2:00.01, respectively. Aidan Brown followed closely behind in 2:00.91, setting a collegiate outdoor best by close to seven seconds, as well as a collegiate overall best in the 800 by close to two seconds.

The men's 1,500 meters straddled the two days at the John Knight Twilight. Two of the six heats got finished before lightning struck Friday night, forcing the rest of the heats to run Saturday. Luis Muradas overcame the schedule change to place second in his heat in a new personal-best time of 4:09.84. Landen Sandoval shaved 11 seconds off his personal best with his finish in 4:19.18. Additionally, Kyle Chen and Simon Walsh set a collegiate and overall best, respectively, with their finishes in 4:20.67 and 4:23.63.

Tom Thake also had his attempt in the steeplechase pushed to Saturday due to Friday's lightning storm. He responded with a fourth-place finish in 10:22.55, shaving five seconds off his debut time in the event from the PNW Invite earlier this season.

Aidan Sweeney added another personal best on the track in the men's 110-meter hurdles. The Viking captain tied the mark he set last week at the Stanford Invitational while finishing sixth overall in 15.10 seconds.

Two more personal bests came from the women's and men's long jump. Akanesi Latu-Alves added 11.25 inches to her outdoor best with a jump of 17-06.25 (5.34m) on the women's side. Damien Parrow, meanwhile, bettered his collegiate best with a jump of 20-03.00 (6.17mn) on the men's side.

The Vikings figure to leave this weekend's poor weather behind them next week, as they head to the greater Los Angeles area for a trio of meets, April 16-18. They'll compete at the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and Pacific Coast Invitational
