AZUSA, Calif. — Records were made to be broken. Even still, it feels a lot better when you're the one breaking your own record.
Emma Stolte and
Jack Macdonald know that feeling, having re-set their overall and freshman records, respectively, in the women's 1,500 and men's 200 meters Saturday at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Â
The stars of the Vikings' first two days in Los Angeles – Macdonald Thursday with another freshman record in the 100 meters (10.62); Stolte Friday with another overall record in the 5k (15:59.87) – the pair combined forces to lead the Vikings Saturday.
Â
Stolte capped the day by bettering her own mark in the women's 1,500 meters. She did so with a finish in 4:20.17, putting her 1.63 seconds under the time she originally set at the PNW Invite on March 20.
Â
Stolte's 1,500-meter time Saturday was also significant because it put her under the final qualifying time for last year's NCAA West First Round (4:20.38). She already has a likely qualifying time in the 5k thanks to last night's record but could be a double qualifier now between the 1,500 and 5k.
Â
Macdonald, meanwhile, became the fastest Viking this century in the men's 200 meters. He finished in 21.17 seconds, winning his heat by 0.15 seconds, and giving him the fastest time by a Viking since Ryon Edwards set the current school record at 21.00 seconds in 1999. Macdonald now ranks third overall in the 200 meters, behind Edwards and John Gentry (21.08 in 1992).
Â
Macdonald originally set the freshman mark in the 200 meters with a time of 21.46 seconds at the PNW Invite on March 20. Saturday's time puts him 0.67 seconds under the old record of 21.84 seconds that Jake Ovgard had held since 2012.
Â
Elsewhere,
Farhan Ibrahim joined Macdonald in rewriting the freshman record book. Ibrahim – a day after setting the freshman record in the 5k – moved up to sixth in the freshman top 10 for the 1,500 meters. He finished in 3:57.17, shaving four seconds off his previous best from the PNW Invite.
Â
Dillon Brost joined Macdonald with a collegiate best in the 200 meters. Brost finished in 22.08 seconds, shaving 0.16 seconds off the PSU best he set as a freshman while also shaving a quarter of a second off his seasonal best.
Â
Brost also joined Macdonald,
Isaiah Cadengo and
Beckett Stolp to run the squad's second-best time in the 4x100-meter relay this season. They finished in 41.73 seconds Saturday, second only to the foursome's finish in 41.44 seconds at the Willamette Invitational on March 28.
Â
Ocean Rideout and
Akanesi Latu-Alves provided two more personal bests for the Vikings in the women's long jump. Both athletes won their flights. Rideout did so with a jump of 18-04.50 (5.60m) on her third of four attempts. Rideout's winning jump put her 2.75 inches past her previous best. She's knocking on the door of the overall top 10 now, as she rails the 10th-best mark by 7.5 inches. Latu-Alves, meanwhile, set her new best on the second of four attempts, jumping 17-09.00 (5.41m). And like Rideout, that put her 2.75 inches past her previous best as she won her flight by a quarter of an inch.
Â
The Vikings have next week off before returning to competition, May 1-2, for the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis.

EUGENE, Ore. — Alison Calvin-Stupfel took another step forward in her recovery from surgery, clearing a seasonal-best 5-00.50 (1.54m) in the women's high jump Saturday at the Oregon Team Invitational.
Â
Calvin-Stupfel cleared the opening bar at 1.49 meters on her second attempt, then came through with a clutch third-attempt clearance at 1.54 meters. That already put her 3.5 inches higher than her opening mark of the season, which she set last week at the John Knight Twilight.
Â
Calvin-Stupfel then took one attempt with the bar at 1.59 meters. She missed it, then passed on her next two attempts to bow out of the competition.
Â
Calvin-Stupfel – when healthy – ranks tied for ninth all-time in the high jump with a clearance at 5-05.00 (1.65m).
Â
No one expects that form from Calvin-Stupfel so early on after surgery, but Saturday's mark was at least a step in the right direction.
