LONG BEACH, Calif. — Many of us have our trip traditions. Turns out
Jack Macdonald's tradition on every trip to California is to set the freshman record in the 100 meters. Macdonald re-set his own freshman record at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Thursday, less than two weeks after he set it at the Stanford Invitational on the Vikings' last trip to The Golden State.
Â
Macdonald shaved a tenth of a second off his previous mark while winning his heat in 10.62 seconds. He now ranks fifth all-time in the 100 meters at Portland State, trailing
Dieumerci Migani's school record of 10.51 from the 2024 Big Sky Outdoor Championships by 11-hundredths of a second.
Â
Macdonald beat conference rival Blake Gross of Sacramento State for the heat win, placing him 19th overall. It was one of three heat wins for the Vikings at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Ocean Rideout and
Savannah Beasley provided the other two in the women's 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles, respectively.
Â
Rideout edged Wisconsin's Eliss Perkins for the heat win in the open 100 meters. She did so while shaving three-tenths of a second off her personal best with her finish in 12.05 seconds.
Olivia Jolivette ran in the same heat as Rideout and placed fourth while setting her own personal best of 12.40 seconds. Both Rideout and Jolivette did so despite running into a 3.5 meters-per-second headwind.
Â
Rideout opened her day with another personal best in the long jump. She jumped 18-01.75 (5.53) on her opening attempt, adding 1.25 inches to the mark she set initially at the PNW Invite on March 21 and later tied at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 4.
Â
Beasley, meanwhile, set personal bests in the open 100 and 100 hurdles Thursday. She started the day in the hurdles, cracking 15 seconds for the first time with her finish in 14.99 seconds. That put her more than a quarter-second ahead of her nearest competitor, Gracie Miotke of Alaska Anchorage.
Â
Beasley then doubled back for a personal best in the open 100 meters, shaving more than two-tenths of a second off her previous best while finishing in 12.44 seconds.
Â
Other standouts for the Vikings Thursday included
Zach Payne in the men's 400 meters. He shaved close to seven-tenths of a second off his previous seasonal best while finishing in 49.43 seconds, behind teammate
Isaiah Cadengo in 48.55 seconds. Payne's time moves him up one spot to sixth in the freshman top 10.
Â
Ashley Peterson knocked two-hundredths of a second off her seasonal best in the women's 400 meters. Peterson finished in 58.04 seconds, bettering her mark from two weeks ago at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational.
Â
Jackson Mathers recorded the first personal best of the day for the Vikings. He cleared 6-05.00 (1.96m) in the men's high jump, putting him a quarter of an inch past his previous best. He sits just a half inch out of the all-time top 10 at Portland State now. He took three attempts at 2.01 meters, which would have tied him for fifth all-time if he had cleared it, but he missed on all three.
Â
The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate served as the opener of a three-meet weekend for the Vikings in the Los Angeles area. The Vikings move over to the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., Friday and Saturday. They'll also compete at the Leopard Invitational Friday in La Verne, Calif.
