Emma Stolte Breaks Own School Record in 5k, Dips Under 16 Minutes with Blazing Final Lap at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. — With a lap to go in the 5k Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Portland State senior Emma Stolte had left herself little room for error. She'd need to run her fastest lap of the race to break the school record she set just two weeks ago at the Stanford Invitational.

But if there's one lesson Viking fans have learned over the 2026 indoor and outdoor season it's to never bet against Stolte. The senior closed with a 71-second final lap – four seconds faster than she ran any other lap – to break 16 minutes in the 5k for the first time with her finish in 15:59.87.

The improvement bolsters Stolte's qualifying position in the 5k for the NCAA West First Round. She had already run under the final qualifying times in each of the last two years with her finish in 16:01.44 at the Stanford Invitational. But the new record Friday should put her in even better standing within the NCAA West Region.

Stolte's record came at the end of what had already been a successful day for the Vikings at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Irina López entered the all-time top 10 in the women's 800 meters with her finish in 2:11.57 earlier in the day. López, who has set three new personal bests in the 800 this season, now ranks ninth all-time in the event. Friday's finish was 1.36 seconds faster than the mark she set two weeks ago at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.

Farhan Ibrahim, meanwhile, opened the day with a freshman record in the men's 5k. Ibrahim shaved nearly 50 seconds off his previous best while finishing in 14:34.85 early Friday morning. Ibrahim's time put him 11 seconds under the previous freshman record that Nick Moore set last season.

Elsewhere, Amir Ahmed led a group of four Vikings in the men's 800 meters with a finish in 1:52.87. It was Ahmed's second time under 1:53 this season, after her seasonal best of 1:52.54 at the PNW Invite on March 21. Abdinajib Abade set an outdoor best in the 800 meters with his finish in 1:54.44.

In the field, Jackson Mathers continued his flirtation with the all-time top 10 in the men's high jump. A day after pushing his personal best to 6-05.00 (1.96m), Mathers took three attempts at 6-06.00 (1.98m). That would have moved him into a tie for ninth all-time, but he missed on all three. He still cleared three bars during the competition between the heights at 1.83, 1.88 and 1.93 meters.

The Vikings could get more top 10 finishes Saturday on the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational. Stolte will cap the day again in the invitational section of the women's 1,500 meters, when she'll be going for another improvement on her own school record.

And as Friday's 5k proved, you're a fool if you bet against Stolte.

LA VERNE, Calif. — Jim Halpert in The Office would hype up his wife Pam Beasley with an enthusiastic "BEASLEY!" whenever she needed it. Well, Portland State's Savannah Beasley earned her own "BEASLEY!" Friday at the Leopard Invitational after becoming the first Viking to enter the all-time top 10 in the 400 hurdles since 2018.

Beasley snapped the eight-year dry spell with a two-second personal best, finishing in 1:02.44. That moved her up to ninth all-time in the event with the best time by a Viking since Katie Baxter finished in 1:02.11 in 2018.

Beasley has now re-set her personal best in the 400 hurdles three times this season. She's shaved more than three seconds off her season-opening time in the event.

Beasley's all-time mark followed an event win from Princess Fletcher in the women's discus earlier in the day. Fletcher recorded the three best throws of the competition, topping out at 124-11 (38.07m). That wasn't a personal best for Fletcher but was still her second-best mark of the season.

Ashley Peterson also ran the open 400 meters Friday. She finished in 58.11 seconds, just off the seasonal best of 58.04 seconds that she set a day earlier at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
