PORTLAND, Ore. — One of the most satisfying things to watch as a track & field fan is when an athlete gets on a PR train. You hop on board and cheer when the train whistle announces each new personal best along the way.
Â
Fans of the Portland State track & field program have been aboard the
Noah Meucci PR train for the past three weeks as the senior thrower has rewritten his best in the discus week after week. His latest mark came Saturday at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational, as he entered the all-time top 10 in the event to lead the Vikings at Lewis & Clark College's Eldon Fix Track.
Â
Meucci initially boarded the PR train at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 5. There, he added four feet to his personal best in the discus with a throw of 140-05 (42.81m). He increased it to 140-11 (42.95m) a week later at the John Knight Twilight. Saturday marked the biggest jump for Meucci as he went close to six feet past his old mark with a best throw of 146-08 (44.72m).
Â
Meucci now ranks eighth all-time in the discus at Portland State. He's the first new entrant to the top 10 in the men's discus since Troy Bacon set the school record at 163-08 (49.88m) in 2017. Meucci now has four top 10 marks to his name between the men's indoor weight throw (third), men's indoor shot put (eighth), men's hammer (third) and men's discus (eighth).
Â
Meucci's personal triumph came alongside two overall triumphs from his teammates,
Dieumerci Migani and
Amir Ahmed. They both posted overall wins for the Vikings between the men's 100 and 800 meters, respectively, part of six heat wins for the Vikings on the day.
Â
Migani won the 100 meters by one-hundredth of a second over Multnomah's Willy Mabena, finishing in 10.68 seconds. Migani also ran the anchor leg of the Viking men's 4x100-meter relay that posted its fastest time since 2016 while placing second overall in 41.86 seconds. That time left Migani and teammates
Braden Latscha,
Ty Hawkins and
Dillon Brost just a quarter of a second outside the top 10 all-time at Portland State.
Â
Ahmed, meanwhile, continued his love affair with the Lewis & Clark track with his win in the men's 800 meters. Ahmed had already won one 800-meter race at Eldon Fix Track back at the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8. Saturday, he added another win to his resume with a finish in 1:52.72, beating Lewis & Clark's Noah Nelson by more than half a second.
Â
Outside of the overall wins, freshman
Emily Schmitke recorded two of the other four heat wins for the Vikings between the women's 800 and 1,500 meters. The 1,500-meter win continued a hot streak for Schmitke at the distance, as she also won her 1,500-meter heat last week at the John Knight Twilight. Schmitke finished in 5:09.50 last week but blew that time out of the water Saturday, winning by more than seven seconds in 5:00.50.
Ania Kapustka and
Taylor Nichols led the Vikings in the women's 1,500 meters, placing fourth and sixth overall in times of 4:41.30 and 4:45.83, respectively. Nichols' time represented a new personal best for her by close to a second and a half, while she also set a new best in the 5k later, finishing in 18:18.57.
Â
Schmitke returned for her second heat win later in the day in the 800 meters. Again, she won by a comfortable margin, finishing over a second ahead of her closest competitor in 2:25.30. That marked a new personal best for Schmitke by close to three seconds, giving her a sweep of her 800 and 1,500 personal bests for the second straight week.
Â
Ahmeah Brown posted another heat win for the Vikings in the women's 800 meters. She won her heat by half a second while finishing in a seasonal best of 2:19.00.
Â
Freshman
Irina López led the Vikings in the women's 800 meters overall, setting a new seasonal best with her finish in 2:16.34 while placing fifth across all heats. López's time moved her up one spot in the all-time freshman rankings, as she now ranks seventh in the 800 among PSU freshmen.
Â
Fellow freshmen
Nick Moore and
Mika Sarver Huber also set freshman top 10 marks for the Vikings Saturday. Like López, Moore bettered a top 10 mark he already had in the men's 1,500 meters, moving up two spots to fourth in the rankings with a personal best of 3:57.10.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim led the Vikings overall in the men's 1,500 meters, setting a huge personal best of his own with his finish in 3:53.42 to place fourth. Ibrahim finished a whopping 11 seconds under his old best, which he set at the same meet two years ago. Freshman
Aidan Brown also posted a huge personal best in the 1,500 meters with his finish in 4:13.45, 10 seconds faster than the time he set just last week at the John Knight Twilight.
Â
Sarver Huber, meanwhile, moved into the freshman top 10 in the men's 10k with his finish in 34:39.69. The finish marked a new personal best for Sarver Huber by close to 85 seconds as he now ranks sixth all-time among PSU freshmen. Sophomore
Lyness Ota also ran his first 10k on the track Saturday, finishing in 34:49.34.
Â
Jackson Mathers added a freshman top 10 mark in the field events, as he moved up one spot to fourth in the triple jump with a seasonal-best jump of 44-01.50 (13.45m). Mathers placed fifth overall in the event, one spot behind teammate
Edward Niyongere, who set an outdoor best with his mark of 45-04.50 (13.83m).
Â
Another freshman,
James Timmins, provided the final heat win for the Vikings, as he won his heat of the men's 110-meter hurdles by more than three-tenths of a second. Timmins won while tying his seasonal best with his finish in 15.89 seconds. Teammate
Deghlan Johnson didn't win his heat but still placed second overall in a new personal best of 15.03 seconds.
Â
Elsewhere,
Addison Capozzi set a new collegiate best in the women's 800 meters with her finish in 2:22.84.
Kyle Chen lowered his personal best to 2:06.44 on the men's side of the 800 meters.
Â
Natalie Cunningham set collegiate bests in the women's shot put and discus, posting marks of 40-03.25 (12.27m) and 115-03 (35.14m), respectively.
Â
Cunningham's soccer teammates
Elle Frazier and
Liv Frazier also set new personal bests in the women's 200 meters. The twin sisters finished in 27.79 and 27.86 seconds, respectively, each shaving about three-quarters of a second off their previous best.
Â
Phoenix Bakkum and Latscha both set new personal bests on the men's side of the 200 meters, finishing in 23.14 and 23.23 seconds, respectively.
Â
The Vikings will take next week off from competition before returning for the OSU High Performance Meet, May 2-3, in Corvallis, Ore.
