Vikings Set 16 Personal or Seasonal Bests at Charles Bowles Invitational

RESULTS

SALEM, Ore. —
Saturday's Charles Bowles Invitational provided those competing for the Portland State cross country teams one last chance to prove themselves ahead of the show-me meets at the end of the season.

The Vikings put their best foot forward, setting a slew of seasonal and personal bests in the women's 5k and men's 8k at Bush's Pasture Park. Every runner on the Viking women's team set either a personal or seasonal best Saturday, while nine of 15 Viking men did so, as well.

The men put together the higher team finish, placing 10th as a team compared to a 14th-place finish for the Viking women. Abdinajib Abade also gave the Viking men the highest individual finish, as he placed 37th overall in the men's 8k in a personal-best time of 24:51.06. Irina López led the Viking women with a 67th overall finish in the 5k in a personal-best time of 18:50.60.

Abade's personal best came in his first race of the season. The senior had sat out the Vikings' first three meets of the season but instantly jumped to the top of the men's team's lineup while shaving 10 seconds off his time at last year's Charles Bowles Invitational.

Freshman Farhan Ibrahim followed Abade at 46th overall in 24:59.01, shaving two seconds off his time at last week's Mike Johnson Classic.

Fellow freshmen Ari Smith and JD Arthur followed Ibrahim at 82nd and 88th overall in times of 25:34.08 and 25:40.59, respectively. Arthur's time marked a six-second improvement over his time at last week's Mike Johnson Classic.

Luke Gillingham closed out the team score for the Vikings with a 109th overall finish in 25:54.64.

Senior Tom Thake shaved more than 21 seconds off his previous best in the 8k, finishing 136th overall in 26:24.65.

Landen Sandoval and Amir Ahmed set two more personal bests over the next two spots in the Vikings' lineup. Sandoval finished 152nd overall in 26:39.58, close to seven seconds faster than his time at last year's Charles Bowles Invitational. Ahmed, meanwhile, shaved 36 seconds off his personal best at the 2023 Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, finishing 157th overall in 26:47.14.

Mike Sarver Huber and Vince Estrada finished back-to-back at 178th and 179th overall in times of 27:03.73 and 27:05.23, respectively.

Freshman Jorge Garcia placed 229th overall in 27:48.68. Ian Parks followed at 244th in 28:08.41 in what was his first race of the season. Lyness Ota followed in 28:27.59, placing 253rd overall.

Simon Walsh set the biggest personal best of the day for the Viking men, shaving more than a minute off the time he set only last week at the Mike Johnson Classic while finishing 267th overall in 28:52.75.

Mohamed Ahmed closed out the Viking men's runner, finishing his first 8k while placing 292nd overall in 30:17.36.

It was a clean sweep of personal or seasonal bests for the Viking women. That was a good showing for a team that was without their top three runners at their first three meets of the season in Emma Stolte, Taylor Nichols and Sam Sharp. Their absence gave the other Viking women a chance to prove themselves, and they took advantage.

López led the way at 67th overall in 18:50.60. That was 53 seconds better than her previous best in the cross country 5k, which she set at last year's Charles Bowles Invitational.

Libby Fox followed at 76th overall in 18:59.10, 20 seconds faster than her prep personal best and 48 seconds faster than her first 5k of the season at the Ash Creek Festival on Sept. 12.

Sonja Jones shaved 20 seconds off her seasonal best while placing 86th overall in 19:06.60. Emily Schmitke set a seasonal best by 36 seconds while placing 121st overall in 19:46.70.

Riley Amarillas and Hannah Butterfield alternated between the smallest and largest seasonal bests over the next two spots for the Viking women. Amarillas ducked under her time at the Lewis & Clark Opener by one second while finishing 147th overall in 20:09.20. Butterfield, meanwhile, shaved more than two and a half minutes off her time at the Ash Creek Festival while finishing 166th overall in 20:35.20.

Talise Wapsheli rounded out the Viking women's runners with a 15-second seasonal best, finishing 227th overall in 21:50.00.

Portland State coaches now anticipate pairing down their travel roster for the final three meets of the season, the Bronco Invitational (Oct. 18), Big Sky Championships (Nov. 1) and NCAA West Regional (Nov. 14).

Saturday's results gave the coaches something to think about.
