PORTLAND, Ore. — Like a family who gets a little too intense on family game night, the Portland State track & field program competed amongst itself Sunday while staying close to home for the Portland Indoor 1 at the University of Portland's Chiles Center.
There was no danger of tossed game boards or fights over who gets to be what game piece, though. The Vikings kept it civil while trying to beat their teammates across a number of events on the track.
The Vikings sent four squads to the starting line in the mixed 4x400-meter relay. All four were gunning for the school record that the foursome of
Jojo Clark Anderson,
Ashley Peterson,
Amir Ahmed and
Wendy Hare set at 3:46.69 at the Spokane Invitational in December. That foursome didn't run together again Sunday, but their record remained safe regardless. Peterson and Hare joined
James Timmins and
Abdinajib Abade to give the record a good threat, as those four won the mixed relay by more than eight and a half seconds in a time of 3:48.46. The foursome of
Simon Walsh,
Elle Frazier,
Dillon Brost and
Irina López won the second heat of the event while finishing second overall in 3:57.00.
The Vikings' third and fourth mixed relay teams also set top marks, giving the Vikings seven overall Sunday to go with two event wins and 10 heat wins.
López provided two top 10 marks as well as one of the two overall wins. In addition to her part in the mixed relay, López won the women's 1k with a finish in 3:05.22. That moved her up to ninth all-time at Portland State as she won the event by close to five seconds.
Nick Moore added one of the other top 10 marks on the men's side of the 1k. Moore won his heat by more than seven seconds while finishing his first-ever 1k in 2:34.02. That moved Moore up to No. 7 in the overall record book and No. 3 in the freshman record book.
Moore pushed Abade out of the top 10, as Abade would have ranked 10th all-time with his finish in 2:35.45 if not for Moore's finish in the following heat. Abade's time still represented a new personal best by six and a half seconds, as he bettered the time he set at the same meet last season.
Luis Muradas set the No. 10 time in the freshman record book with his finish in 2:41.32. Fellow freshman
Aidan Brown and
Victor Ramirez would have entered the freshman top 10 as well with their finishes in 2:41.48 and 2:42.17, respectively, if not for Moore's and Muradas' finishes ahead of them.
Veteran
Tom Thake shaved six and a half seconds off his previous best in the 1k with his finish in 2:46.91.
Peterson set the first top 10 mark of the day for the Vikings with her finish in the women's 600 meters. Peterson, primarily a 400-meter runner, extended to the 600 meters for the first time in her career and finished second overall in 1:39.33. That gave Peterson her first individual top 10 mark as a Viking, as she moved up to eighth all-time in the 600.
Addison Capozzi added a personal best in the 600 with her finish in 1:45.06.
Ahmeah Brown posted an identical time while winning a later heat in 1:45.06.
Three freshman top 10 marks came on the men's side of the 600 meters for the Vikings. Timmins led that group with his finish in 1:27.89, moving him up to fifth in the freshman record book.
Phoenix Bakkum followed in 1:29.76, moving up to No. 8, while
Jojo Clark Anderson moved up to No. 10 with his finish in 1:34.61.
Taylor Nichols and
Emily Schmitke both set personal bests in the longest event of the day for the Vikings, the women's mile. Nichols finished second overall in the mile while shaving two seconds off the time she set at the Spokane Invitational in December with her finish in 5:17.38. Schmitke, meanwhile, shaved two-and-a-quarter seconds off the time she set a week ago at the UW Preview, finishing in 5:30.75.
The Vikings got the day started with the women's 200 meters where five of the nine Vikings competing set indoor bests, including three heat wins.
Sienna Rosario set an indoor best with their finish in 27.32 seconds, winning their heat by more than three-tenths of a second.
Ocean Rideout set an overall best with her finish in 27.55 seconds, just ahead of
Olivia Jolivette, who set an indoor best with her finish in 27.61 seconds.
Akanesi Latu-Alves won her heat by a quarter of a second while setting an indoor best with her finish in 28.06 seconds.
Maile Yancey didn't better her indoor best but still won her heat by more than six-tenths of a second with her finish in 28.07 seconds.
Elle Frazier gave the Vikings their final heat win and overall best in the women's 200 meters, as she finished in 28.77 seconds.
Mason Becker won his heat of the men's 200 meters by seven-tenths of a second while bettering the indoor best he set last week with his finish in 24.21 seconds.
The Vikings return to Seattle next week for the UW Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. They'll hope for another civil, yet competitive family game night once they're back at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor facility.
