Good Golly: Ocean Rideout Opens Heptathlon with Personal Best in High Jump, 800-Point Score in 200

GRESHAM, Ore. — Ocean Rideout said one word after her last attempt in the shot put during Wednesday's first day of the heptathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

"Golly!"

The rest of us can only hope to have such a good attitude about a brand-new challenge in front of us. Rideout was competing in her first-ever heptathlon Wednesday at Mt. Hood Community College's Earl L. Klapstein Stadium. She responded with three heptathlon top 10 marks, including an overall best in the high jump and an 800-point score in the 200 meters.

Rideout sits in 16th with 2,566 points after the first day of the competition. If she matches her per-event score Thursday, then she'll enter the all-time top 10 at Portland State. Again, after only one go at the heptathlon.

"Golly!"

Rideout's day got started with a time of 16.25 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. That was a tenth of a second off her overall best in the event, which she set two weeks ago at the OSU High Performance Meet. It also gave Rideout her first heptathlon top 10 mark of the day, as she now ranks 10th all-time in the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles at Portland State.

Rideout – a clutch performer in her time as a Portland State soccer player, scoring six of her 10 career goals after the 75th minute – proved nails again in the high jump. Over on her first attempts at 1.45, 1.48 and 1.51 meters, she needed three attempts to clear on 1.54 meters. The clutch clearance put her over five feet for the first time – 5-00.50, to be exact – and moved her up to seventh all-time in the heptathlon high jump.

Rideout threw 26-05.00 (8.05m) in the shot put, another event, besides the heptathlon, that was completely new to her.

She closed with her best mark of the day, a time of 25.82 seconds in the 200 meters. That placed her sixth in the 200 and gave Rideout her highest event score of the day with 813 points.

Thursday's second day of the heptathlon will get underway at 11 a.m. with the long jump before the javelin and 800 meters follow at approximately 12:15 and 1:45 p.m., respectively. The long jump figures to be Rideout's strongest event of the day, with an overall best of 18-04.50 (5.60m).

Get out strong, and a top 10 mark could be on the table for her.
