SEATTLE, Wash. — The year 2025 is legitimate now that it has track & field in it.

The Portland State track & field program must feel that way as the Vikings got their 2025 schedule underway with the UW Preview at Dempsey Indoor Facility Friday.

Freshman
Irene Montoliu Tio got the first meet of the year off with a bang as she set a school record in her very first race as a Viking. Montoliu Tio won her heat of the women's 600 meters in 1:33.75, shaving more than three seconds off the record teammate
Wendy Hare set at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet last November.

Montoliu Tio was running in the same heat as Hare, but took off and won the heat by nearly a second over Washington's Elle Rutherford. Hare finished third in the heat in 1:37.46. Fellow freshman
Irina López ran in an earlier heat and finished in 1:37.53.

The Vikings nearly got another school record from
Daniel Coppedge in the men's weight throw. Coppedge has thrown farther than the current record – 55-04.25 (16.87m) by Jim Webster in 2003 – but only when he's competed unattached. Friday was his first action in a PSU singlet and Coppedge topped out at 53-00.00 (16.15m) on his fourth attempt of the day. That moved Coppedge up to second all-time behind Webster.

Teammate
Noah Meucci was also competing in the weight throw Friday and posted a personal best of 49-00.75 (14.95m) on his second attempt of the day. Meucci returned for the shot put alongside freshman
Jackson Wurz later in the day, and finished with a best mark of 43-07.00 (13.28m). Wurz posted a mark of 41-02.25 (12.55m), adding 14 inches to his indoor best and moving him up to fifth in the freshman record book.

The record in the men's triple jump was also under threat Friday.
Dieumerci Migani set the school record in the outdoor triple jump at last year's Big Sky Championships, a day after setting the 100-meter school record in the prelims. The indoor record in the triple jump – 50-00.50 (15.25m) by Yuriy Yermakov in 2000 – was right at Migani's outdoor record of 50-00.75 (15.26m).

Asking for Migani to be at that level again in his first meet of the season would have been a lot. Even still, he moved up to fifth all-time with an indoor best of 48-04.00 (14.73m). Teammate
Edward Niyongere was right behind him at 47-11.25 (14.61m), adding three and a half feet to his overall best in the triple jump and moving him up to sixth all-time. Freshman
Jackson Mathers was also competing Friday and added close to six inches to his indoor best with a mark of 41-07.00 (12.67m).

The triple jump mark was one of two top 10 marks Migani set on the day. He also made a splash on the track as he and
Micah Avery – a PSU football player – became the first Vikings to crack seven seconds in the 60 meters since Josh Pikes in 2018. Migani led the duo in 6.97 seconds, tying him with Jake Ovgard for sixth all-time in the event. Avery finished in 6.99 seconds to move up to eight all-time.

Avery returned for the 200 meters later and led a group of four Vikings in the event with his time of 22.95 seconds.
Dillon Brost followed in an indoor best of 23.16 seconds, bettering his high school mark from the 2024 WHSAA Indoor State Championships.

The Vikings' middle distance runners added a couple more top 10 marks for the Vikings. While Montoliu Tio set the school record in the women's 600 meters,
Amir Ahmed came within a second and a half of the men's record while finishing in 1:20.85. That moved Ahmed up to third all-time in the event, behind only Nate Boyer (1:19.48 in 2006) and Chase Lovercheck (1:19.73 in 2023).

Freshmen
Victor Ramirez,
Aidan Brown and
Simon Walsh all followed Ahmed with personal bests of their own. Ramirez led the first-year trio with a finish in 1:26.16, close to four seconds better than his time at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet in November. That moved him up to fourth in the freshman record books in the event. Brown shaved nearly a full second off his 600-meter best while finishing in 1:28.77, while Walsh shaved more than three seconds off his previous best with his finish in 1:31.11.

Ania Kapustka and
Taylor Nichols, meanwhile, both set top 10 marks in the women's 1,000 meters. Both were already in the top 10 at the distance, but improved their standing with their finishes in 2:56.97 and 3:00.03, respectively. Kapustka, who shaved more than two seconds off her previous best with her finish, became just the second woman to crack 2:57 in the 1,000 meters at Portland State. Nichols, meanwhile, nearly cracked three minutes for the first time while moving up to fifth all-time in the event.

Kapustka added another collegiate best with her finish in 2:18.77 in the women's 800 meters later in the day. Kapustka bettered her previous best as a Viking by nearly six and a half seconds with her time.

Elsewhere,
Tori Forst led the Viking women's sprinters in both the 60 and 200 meters. Forst finished the prelims of the 60 meters in 7.77 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second slower than the personal best she set at 7.76 seconds at the Spokane Invitational in December. Forst bettered her previous best in the indoor 200 meters by more than a quarter of a second with her finish in 25.74 seconds later in the day.

The Vikings also got two freshman marks out of the men's 60-meter hurdles.
Deghlan Johnson, not one of the two freshmen, led a trio of Vikings in the event with his finish in 8.70 seconds. Freshmen
Aidan Sweeney and
James Timmins then followed in time of 8.78 and 9.00 seconds, moving them up to fifth and eighth, respectively, in the freshman record book.

The meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relays, with both the Viking women and men setting seasonal bests. The Viking women shaved nine seconds off their seasonal best, as the foursome of
Ashley Peterson, Hare, López and
Ahmeah Brown finished in 4:03.64. The Viking men knocked a second off their best, as the foursome of
Eman Kargbo, Ahmed,
Jojo Clark Anderson and
Miles Green finished in 3:34.51.

The Vikings stay in Seattle for the Mile City meet Saturday. Those who competed Friday will return to action for the UP Indoor #1 next Sunday, Jan. 26.
