FARMINGTON, Utah — Winter in May usually only happens in the Southern Hemisphere. But if it's a winter academic award, then thirty-three Portland State student-athletes will happily say, G'day, mate! That's the number of Vikings who received Academic All-Big Sky honors Wednesday, as the conference released its winter honorees from men's and women's basketball and men's and women's indoor track & field.
Â
The Vikings' women's indoor track & field team received the most honorees with 16, followed by men's indoor track & field with nine. Women's basketball had seven players earn the honor, while men's basketball had one.
Â
"I want to congratulate the outstanding work of the nearly 500 student-athletes who qualified for our Winter All-Academic Team,"Â Big Sky Conference Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. "Achieving this honor not only shows the high level of dedication each of our student-athletes have to succeeding in their fields of competition, but also their commitment to excelling in the classroom. I also want to thank our coaches, support staffs and campus leaders around the Big Sky Conference for continuing to create environments that promote academic excellence."
Â
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) Participated in at least half of the team's competitions; 2) Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the conclusion of the most recently completed term; 3) Completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky institution.Â
Â
For indoor track only: student-athletes may participate in at least half of the team's competitions or the conference championship.
