MOSCOW, Idaho — A pair of personal bests highlighted the Portland State track & field program's final day at the Big Sky Indoor Championships Saturday.
Natalia Martino put down the first one, as she shaved five seconds off her previous best in the mile while placing second in her heat and 10th overall in 5:02.51. Martino's time put her just outside of the all-time top 10 at Portland State in the mile, while it represented an improvement over her time three weeks earlier at the Portland Indoor Two.
Freshman
Paul Beaven provided the other personal best Saturday, as he shaved three seconds off his best in the 3k with a finish in 8:32.36. Beaven's time moves him up to second in the freshman record book for the 3k, a day after Beaven set the freshman record in the 5k.
Fellow freshmen
Peyten Woodruff and
Emma Stolte didn't set personal bests, but they were both within a second of the times they set at the WSU Open while finishing the mile in 5:07.67 and 5:12.10, respectively.
Aimee Mackenzie also didn't set a personal best Saturday, but won her heat by a second with a finish in 5:15.24.
Woodruff also ran her first 3k Saturday, finishing in 10:41.73 to beat her prep time in the 3,200 meters by close to a minute.
Alex Barbour led a group of six Vikings in the women's 3k, as she placed 11th overall in a time of 9:48.14. Barbour was returning to the track after running the anchor leg of the women's distance medley relay that tied a program record with a second-place finish Friday. Two of Barbour's relay teammates,
Bára Stýblová and
Tatum Miller, joined her in the 3k, finishing 16th and 18th overall, respectively, in times of 9:58.59 and 10:00.64.
Saturday wraps up the indoor track & field season for the Vikings. They'll now take the next two weekends off from competition before opening their outdoor season March 17-18 at the L&C Spring Break Open and Oregon Preview.
