SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Jordan MacIntosh and
Alex Barbour led the Portland State men's and women's cross country teams with a pair of historic performances at the front of the Vikings' lineups, as the teams returned to action Friday at the Bill Dellinger Invitational at Pine Ridge Golf Club.
MacIntosh finished sixth overall amid a stacked field in the men's 8k, becoming the first Viking – man or woman – to finish in the top 10 at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Barbour, meanwhile, placed 14th overall, one spot behind the highest finish ever by a Viking woman at the meet. That record was set when there were only 30 women in the field, however, while there were 74 finishers in Friday's women's 6k.
What's more, Barbour's time of 20:33.5 moved her up to second all time in the cross country 6k at Portland State, ranking her behind only program-legend and current volunteer assistant coach
Katie Camarena. Barbour's time stands as the fourth-fastest cross country 6k across all results, as Camarena had two other low times in addition to her record of 20:00.4 from last season's Bronco Invitational.
The performances came against a field that featured ranked teams across both races. Six of the seven Division I men's teams in Friday's 8k entered the meet regionally ranked by the USTFCCCA, as were eight of the nine Division I women's teams.
The Viking men placed fourth as a team amid the talented field, beating two other teams ranked in the USTFCCCA West Region in Washington State (10th in the latest west rankings) and Cal State Fullerton (13th). UCLA (ranked 14th in the West) surprised the field by placing third as a team with 63 points, thanks to three runners finishing in the top 10. UCLA narrowly missed finishing second, as Portland (fourth in the West, 19th nationally) edged them by a single point with 62 team points. Oregon, the meet hosts, won the men's race by 23 points over Portland, finishing with 39 points.
The Vikings finished with 104 points as a team, 16 ahead of Washington State and 31 ahead of Cal State Fullerton. UC Davis, not in the USTFCCCA West Rankings, finished seventh with 195 points.
Keynan Abdi followed MacIntosh at 15th overall, which would have been the highest finish ever by a Viking men's runner at the meet if not for MacIntosh's finish. Both MacIntosh and Abdi posted strong times in leading the Vikings. MacIntosh cracked 24 minutes in the 8k for only the second time in his career while finishing in 23:51.5. Abdi nearly cracked 24 minutes as well with his time of 24:02.7.
Both runners ran with the chase group through the first three-quarters of the race. Through five splits, MacIntosh was still within three-tenths of a second of the leader of the chase pack, while Abdi was less than a second back of MacIntosh. Things got strung out from there as the field caught up with early-leader Brian Barsaiya of Washington State. MacIntosh countered well over the final stretch, however, as he passed three runners after the final split to finish sixth.
Ben Drew and
Sam Lingwall led the group behind MacIntosh and Abdi, finishing 33rd and 34th overall, respectively. Both runners set personal bests at the meet, though by widely different chunks of time. Drew's personal best came by three-tenths of a second, as he finished in 24:34.0. Lingwall chopped 80 seconds off his previous best in the cross country 8k with his time of 24:35.6. His previous best came at the snowy Big Sky Winter Championships during the COVID-altered 2020-21 school year, however, a race that was also run at elevation in Riverdale, Utah.
Josh Jarpey set another personal best for the Vikings by just under 30 seconds, while closing out the team score with a 39th-place finish in 24:37.6.
Jacob Lawrence followed two spots behind Jarpey at 41st overall in 24:42.1.
Zach Grams finished 51st overall while setting close to a 90-second personal best with his time of 24:56.0. The large personal best continues the trend Grams started during the Vikings' 2022 outdoor season. Grams set a new personal best in the 5k in his first three races at the distance, shaving a total of 88 seconds off his personal best coming into the season. He also set two personal bests in the 1,500 meters, and ran his first outdoor 10k during the season.
Ben Vanderbosh finished two spots behind Grams at 53rd overall in 25:00.6.
Cam McChesney rounded out the Viking men's runners at the meet, placing 81st overall in 26:24.6 for another new personal best for the Vikings.
Barbour's No. 2-ranked time was one of two personal bests the Viking women set in the 6k Friday. Besides Barbour,
Jamie Zamrin – third in the Vikings' lineup at 48th overall – shaved 35 seconds off her 6k personal best with her finish in 21:46.1.
Overall, the Viking women found themselves a bit unlucky at the meet. Two Vikings had to scratch from the meet before the race due to preventative measures, including
Tatum Miller, who won the Viking Rust Buster in the team's first race of the season on Sept. 2.
Jalen Marcil was then forced to drop from the race four-minutes into the 6k, leaving the Viking women with only six runners at that point. They weren't helped by a lightning quick start to the race, either, and so they wound up eighth as a team, 50 points behind UCLA in seventh.
Those remaining still raced well considering the adversity, especially Barbour, Zamrin and
Maya Irving, who placed second in the Vikings' lineup at 28th overall. Irving moved up steadily throughout the race, passing 12 runners between the second and third splits, and then another 11 between the third and fourth. Irving's time of 21:13.0 represents a strong opener for the sophomore, as it's less than 10 seconds behind her finish at the NCAA West Regional at the end of last season.
Abi Swain placed fourth in the Vikings' lineup while finishing four spots behind Zamrin at 52nd overall in 21:53.6.
Natalia Martino followed three spots behind Swain at 55th overall in 21:59.4.
Phoebe Brown closed out the Viking women's presence at the meet while finishing 63rd overall in 22:14.1.
The Vikings will be back in action next Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore., on Oct. 1. The runners who ran for the Vikings Friday at the Bill Dellinger Invitational won't run at that meet, however. They will run next on Oct. 15 at either Pre-Nationals (the Weis-Crockett Invitational) or the L&C Invite.
