COLFAX, Wash. — The Portland State cross country program raced against the best in the West Friday at the NCAA West Regional. The Viking women placed 35th in the 6k at Colfax Golf Course, while the Viking men finished 31st in the 10k.
Â
The entire top five for the Viking women's team improved their times from their only other 6k this season at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 11.
Â
Emma Stotle and
Ania Kapustka – as they have all season – led the Viking women. The pair made two big moves over the course of the women's 6k. They jumped 20 spots between the 1k and 2.2k splits, then passed more than 30 runners over the final 1k of the race.
Â
Stolte finished 151st overall in 22:10.0, nearly five seconds better than her time at the Bill Dellinger Invite and a new personal best. Kapustka set a 16-second personal best while placing 159th overall in 22:12.6.
Â
Taylor Nichols jumped 10 spots over the final two kilometers of the race while finishing 227th overall in 23:12.2.
Â
Campbell Faust and
Emily Schmitke closed out the team score at 248th and 256th overall, respectively, in times of 23:51.5 and 24:34.1.
Viola Alessandrini also competed for the Vikings, finishing 261st overall in 25:05.4.
Â
The 10k was new territory for the Viking men. Teams don't run a 10k until the regional and national meets, so only three of the Vikings' six runners had run a cross country 10k before.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim paced the Viking men, finishing 147th overall in 32:15.7.
Abdinajib Abade improved on his finish at last year's NCAA West Regional, while placing as the Viking men's second runner at 160th overall in 32:42.3.
Â
Freshman
Nick Moore followed at 182nd overall in 33:25.9.
Tom Thake set a new 10k personal best while finishing 192nd overall in 33:59.0.
Â
Freshmen
Luis Muradas and
Kyle Chen rounded out the Viking men's runners at the meet, placing 204th and 205th, respectively, in times of 35:37.5 and 35:46.1.
Â
Friday's NCAA West Regional concludes the 2024 cross country season for the Portland State Vikings.
