SUNNYVALE, Calif. — At the beginning of the 2019 Portland State cross country season, head coach
David Hepburn lamented the loss of two "low sticks" as he termed them in
Kaila Gibson and
Sarah Medved. It was understandable since Gibson and Medved each earned All-Big Sky honors with top-10 finishes at the Big Sky meet last season, and went 1-2 at every meet for the Vikings. That lament may have just disappeared Saturday, however, as sophomore
Hunter Storm came within 3.3 seconds of the school record in the 6k while leading the Viking women at the Bronco Invitational.
Â
Storm finished 18th overall in 20:51.4, a time that would have broken the school record in the 6k if Medved and Gibson hadn't finished in 20:48.1 and 20:48.4, respectively, at last season's NCAA West Regional. Those times came in both Medved's and Gibson's final cross country races as Vikings, while Storm's time came in just the fourth race of her sophomore season.
Â
Storm's near-record set the tone for the Viking women, who placed 11th as a team with 300 points at Baylands Regional Park. Four out of the five Vikings who competed at the meet set new personal bests, led by Storm, while freshman
Saville Feist ran her first collegiate 6k  at the meet.
Â
Junior
Delaney White followed Storm with her own historic mark, as she shaved 32 seconds off her personal best while finishing 32nd overall in 21:08.0. White's time moved her up to sixth all time at Portland State in the 6k, putting White in the all-time top 10s for the 4k and 6k.
Â
Sophomore
Phoebe Jacques would have entered the career top 10 based on times coming into Saturday, but just missed out after White shuffled things around with her time. Jacques still set a 17-second personal best while finishing 56th overall in 21:38.2, beating the time she set at the NCAA West Regional at the end of last season.
Â
Feist placed as the Viking women's fourth runner, finishing 102nd overall in 22:10.2. Feist was running the first 6k of her collegiate career at the meet, after she hadn't competed for the Vikings since the team's season-opening meet on Sept. 7.
Â
Sophomore
Phoebe Brown rounded out the Viking women's contingent while setting her fourth straight personal best to open the season. Brown is 4-for-4 in setting personal bests this season, and lowered her 6k personal best to 22:14.4 while placing 108th overall Saturday. Brown beat her time at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 13 by more than 30 seconds, and has now lowered her 6k personal best by close to 85 seconds since the beginning of the year.
Â
The Viking men only set one personal best in the men's 8k at the Bronco Invitational while placing 13th as a team with 332 points.Â
Â
Sophomore
Drew Seidel was a bright spot for the Vikings, as he set an 18-second seasonal best while leading the Vikings at 48th overall in 24:55.3. Seidel, who led the Vikings at four of six meets last season, hadn't finished as the Vikings' top runner yet this season, but broke that streak Saturday.
Â
Senior
Tom Richardson made his first appearance in the Vikings' lineup Saturday, after transferring from Boise State. Richardson finished second in the Vikings' lineup behind Seidel while placing 54th overall in 24:57.7. Richardson's time was only six seconds off his personal best at Boise State.
Â
Jason Rae followed Richardson at 61st overall for the Vikings, finishing in 25:02.3.
Â
Sophomore
Josh Snyder was the lone Viking men's runner to set a personal best, as he lowered his 8k personal best for the third straight meet. Snyder shaved nine seconds off the 8k personal best he set two weeks ago at the Charles Bowles Invitational, finishing 65th overall in 25:04.2.Â
Â
Sophomore
Max Norman and freshman
Brandon Hippe closed out the Vikings' runners in the men's race, as they placed 114th and 149th overall, respectively, in times of 25:47.6 and 26:29.3.
Â
Saturday's Bronco Invitational served as the final tune-up meet for the Vikings ahead of the Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 2. The Viking women will open the conference meet with a 5k at 10 a.m. (MT), while the men follow with an 8k at 11 a.m. (MT).
