Runnin' Like It's 1999: Jack Macdonald Breaks 27-Year-Old School Record in 200 Meters to Open OSU High Performance Meet

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Prince lyric "Party like it's 1999" doesn't work for Portland State track & field freshman Jack Macdonald. If he were to do that, he wouldn't even be an embryo. And yet, the 19-year-old delivered the first new record in the men's 200 meters since 1999 Friday in leading the Vikings on the first day of the OSU High Performance Meet.

Macdonald broke a 27-year-old mark in the 200 meters while becoming the first Viking ever to crack 21 seconds at the distance. Macdonald finished in 20.91 seconds at Whye Track & Field Center, shaving nine-hundredths of a second off the old record that Ryon Edwards set at 21.00 seconds before the turn of the century.

Macdonald's record – which came with a second-overall finish, behind only unattached runner Cameron Andrews, who finished in 20.75 seconds – set the tone for a Viking program looking to establish itself this May. The OSU High Performance Meet serves as the regular-season finale for the Vikings, who will then host the Big Sky Outdoor Championships for the first time since 2013, May 13-16, at Mt. Hood Community College.

Macdonald put himself down as a name to watch at the Big Sky meet with Friday's record. He ranks third in the 200 within the conference now, behind only Montana's Karsen Beitz (20.55) and Idaho's Kennan Kuntz (20.58).

The 200 meters was a strong event for the Vikings across the board Friday. Besides Macdonald, fellow freshman Isaiah Cadengo shaved nearly three-tenths of a second off his seasonal best with his finish in 21.65 seconds. That moved Cadengo up to second in the freshman top 10 and seventh in the overall top 10 for the 200. Phoenix Bakkum also shaved more than a quarter of a second off his seasonal best with his finish in 23.13 seconds.

Five of six Viking runners set personal bests in the women's 200 meters. That list included Sienna Rosario, who led the Vikings in the event while making her competitive return for the first time since the PNW Invite on March 21. Rosario finished 10th overall in 25.10 seconds, shaving 0.14 seconds off the personal best she set at the 2025 version of the OSU High Performance Meet.

Ocean Rideout followed Rosario in 25.17 seconds, shaving 0.13 off the personal best she set three weeks ago at the John Knight Twilight. Rideout also tied her second-best mark in the long jump with a jump of 18-01.75 (5.53m). She's now jumped over 18 feet at five straight meets after initially breaking through at the PNW Invite on March 21.

Olivia Jolivette wasn't too far behind Rideout in 25.33 seconds, knocking a half-second off her personal best and two-thirds of a second off her seasonal best. Norhan Abdel Halim and Lydia Medina provided the last two personal bests for the Viking women in the 200 meters while finishing in 26.03 and 26.56 seconds, respectively.

Elsewhere, Princess Fletcher joined Macdonald and Cadengo in setting a new overall top 10 mark Friday. Fletcher set hers in the women's discus, moving up to seventh all-time while adding nearly seven feet to her previous best. Fletcher's mark of 132-10 (40.50m) came on her final attempt of the day, and also moved her up to fourth in the freshman top 10.

More personal bests came on the track for the Vikings. Ashley Peterson shaved a second off her personal best in the 400-meter hurdles while placing fourth overall in 1:03.01. Teammate Savannah Beasley, who became the first Vikings since 2018 to enter the all-time top 10 in the 400 hurdles two weeks ago, followed Peterson in fifth at 1:03.58.

In the distances, Emily Schmitke cracked five minutes in the women's 1,500 meters for the first time in her career, finishing in 4:59.17.

Landen Sandoval and Mika Sarver Huber both set personal bests in the open sections of the men's 5k. Sandoval shaved more than 35 seconds off his previous best while finishing in 15:52.88. Sarver Huber dipped under his previous best by two seconds with his finish in 16:25.78.

Tom Thake also ducked a second under his previous best in the steeplechase, finishing in 10:21.51.

The Vikings will continue at the OSU High Performance Meet Saturday. Rideout opens the meet for the Vikings with the women's high jump at 12 p.m. Track events get underway with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 2 p.m.

Macdonald returns to the track for the Vikings' final event of the day, the men's 100 meters at 5 p.m. His personal best of 10.62 seconds came two weeks ago at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 16, putting him 0.11 seconds behind the current record that Dieumerci Migani set at 10.51 in 2024.

Macdonald is old enough to remember 2024. But 1999? Friday's 200-meter record wouldn't have even been a thought in his parents' mind at that time.
