Edward Niyongere Sets Top 10 Mark in Triple Jump, Four Vikings Post Heat Wins on Second Day of OSU High Performance Meet

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
A year ago, Edward Niyongere was early in his recovery from a torn ACL when the OSU High Performance Meet came around in early May. But Saturday, Niyongere put together a career-best showing as the Vikings returned to the OSU High Performance Meet at Whyte Track and Field Center.

Eighth in the men's triple jump going into his sixth and final attempt of the day, Niyongere uncorked a personal best of 48-00.75 (14.65m) to move up to second in the standings. Niyongere now ranks fifth all-time in the event outdoors at Portland State. He bettered his overall best by one and a half inches, beating his mark from the UW Preview back in January.

Dieumerci Migani – the school record holder in the outdoor triple jump – placed sixth in the event Saturday with a best jump of 46-03.25 (14.10m). That's far off his record jump of 50-00.75 (15.26m) from last year's Big Sky Outdoor Championships, but it was his first triple jump of the season.

Competing alongside Niyongere and Migani, Jackson Mathers set one of his two freshman top 10 marks in the triple jump Saturday. Mathers set a personal best by 3.25 inches while finishing with a best mark of 44-05.25 (13.54m). That moved him up one spot to third in the freshman record book in the triple jump.

He also moved up one spot into a tie for eighth in the high jump while clearing a seasonal-best 6-02.00 (1.88m). He cleared on his first attempts at 1.78 and 1.83 meters before coming through with a clutch third-attempt clearance at 1.88 meters.

Mathers' fellow Jackson – Jackson Wurz – also produced two freshman top 10 marks Saturday. Like Mathers, Wurz came up clutch while competing in the men's javelin. With fouls on his first two attempts, Wurz produced a nervy throw of 160-02 (48.83m) on his third attempt to qualify for the final. He then pushed his mark out to 173-05 (52.86m) on his fifth attempt, adding nearly 22 feet to his personal best from two weeks earlier at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational. He jumped up three spots to seventh in the freshman rankings in the javelin with the mark.

His returned for the men's shot put later in the day where he produced a seasonal best of 39-07.25 (12.07m). That moved him up two spots to seventh in the freshman record book in the shot put.

On the track, Emma Stolte produced her second heat win in as many days at the OSU High Performance Meet, following up her win in the women's 1,500 meters Friday with one in the 800 Saturday. Stolte has proven her race savviness throughout the outdoor season, but Saturday's 800 win may have been her masterpiece. Third going into the homestretch, Stolte swung out wide into lane two to pass Eastern Washington's Sara Sanders over the final 50 meters while holding off Oregon State's Noemi Lundgren for the win.

Stolte finished in 2:13.34, seven-hundredths of a second ahead of Lundgren and close to three-quarters of a second ahead of Sanders. The time marked a new personal best by 13-hundredths of a second, while putting Stolte within seven-tenths of a second of entering the all-time top 10 at the distance.

The women's 800 meters proved a strong event for the Vikings overall. In addition to Stolte's heat win, the Vikings got a freshman top 10 mark out of Irina López, who finished in 2:16.29. López didn't move up at all in the rankings, but it still represented a new seasonal best for her by five-hundredths of a second.

Taylor Nichols cracked 2:20 in the 800 for the first time outdoors and only the second time overall. Nichols finished in 2:19.64, beating her time from the UW Invitational during the indoor season by three-tenths of a second.

Addison Capozzi added another heat win for the Vikings in the women's 800 meters. Capozzi won her heat by more than a second and a half while finishing in 2:22.98.

The men's sprinters produced two more heat wins for the Vikings between Braden Latscha in the 100 meters and Tommie Olubisi in the 400. Latscha won his heat by three-tenths of a second while finishing in a personal best of 11.20 seconds. That put him just one-hundredth of a second outside of the freshman top 10 in the event. Olubisi, meanwhile, won his 400-meter heat in a seasonal best of 50.91 seconds.

Sienna Rosario and James Timmins contributed a sixth and seventh freshman top 10 mark for the Vikings between the women's 100 meters and men's 110-meter hurdles. Rosario jumped two spots to eighth in the freshman record book while setting a seasonal best with her finish in 12.46 seconds. Timmins, meanwhile, shaved close to four-tenths of a second off his seasonal best with his finish in 15.51 seconds. Timmins jumped one spot in the freshman top 10 to fifth, switching places with teammate Aidan Sweeney, who competed for the first time in nearly two months while finishing the 110 hurdles in 15.95 seconds. Deghlan Johnson led the Vikings in the event with a finish in 15.10 seconds.

Other strong marks for the Vikings came from Natalie Cunningham in the women's shot put. Cunningham finished third in the event while setting a collegiate best for the second straight meet with her throw of 40-04.75 (12.31m).

Freshman Victor Ramirez cracked two minutes in the men's 800 meters for the first time as a Viking, finishing in 1:59.41.

Ashley Peterson posted her second-best time of the season in the women's 400 meters while finishing in 58.48 seconds. Peterson's time trailed only the personal best she set at 57.58 seconds at the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8.

The Vikings will return to Corvallis next weekend for the Oregon State Last Chance meet, May 9-10. That will be one of two meets to close out the regular season for the Vikings, as they'll also compete in Eugene for the Oregon Twilight on May 9.
