MONMOUTH, Ore. — Youth led the day for the Portland State track & field program Saturday at the John Knight Twilight. Out of five heat wins for the Vikings, three came from freshmen while a fourth came from a women's 4x100-meter relay team that featured three freshmen. Another two freshmen top 10 marks furthered the youth moment for the Vikings at McArthur Field.
Â
Sienna Rosario led the way between an individual heat win in the women's 200 meters while also running a leg on the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay. Rosario won her heat of the 200 meters by close to two seconds while setting a personal best by close to half a second with her finish in 25.74 seconds.
Â
The 200-meter win came after Rosario ran the second leg of the Vikings' women's 4x100-meter relay that won its heat by more than three seconds. The Viking women, who were running their first 4x100-meter relay since 2018, finished third overall in 49.36 seconds.
Aida Wheat ran the opening leg for the Vikings, while
Ashley Peterson and
Maile Yancey ran the third and fourth legs, respectively.
Â
Braden Latscha added another heat win for the Viking freshmen on the men's side of the sprints. Latscha won his heat by four-hundredths of a second while setting a new personal best with his finish in 11.29 seconds.
Â
Ty Hawkins led the Vikings overall in the men's 100 meters with a seasonal-best finish in 11.10 seconds.
Tommie Olubisi also set a seasonal best with his finish in 11.29 seconds.
Â
Emily Schmitke represented the Viking freshmen well with a heat win in the women's 800 meters. Schmitke won her section by more than 13 seconds while setting a 14-second personal best with her finish in 2:28.18.
Â
Fellow freshman
Irina López led the Vikings overall in the women's 800 meters, placing eighth in 2:19.33. Two other Vikings set seasonal bests in
Taylor Nichols and
Viola Alessandrini, who finished in 2:21.46 and 2:24.25, respectively. Nichols' seasonal best represented her best mark outdoors in the 800 meters, bettering a two-year-old outdoor best she set as a freshman at the 2023 OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
Ahmeah Brown provided the fifth heat win for the Vikings in the women's 400 meters. Brown won her heat in 1:01.44, setting a new personal best by close to a second in the process. Peterson led the Vikings overall in the women's 400 meters, finishing third in 58.58 seconds.
Â
James Timmins bettered his freshman top 10 mark in the men's 110-meter hurdles near the start of the day for the Vikings. Timmins finished in 15.89 seconds, lowering his No. 6 time in the freshman record book by seven-hundredths of a second.
Â
Jackson Mathers moved up to fifth in the men's triple jump within the freshman record book while placing third overall Saturday. Mathers jumped from eighth to third in the standings on his final attempt of the day, as he set a new seasonal best with his final mark of 43-07.00 (13.28m).
Â
Jackson Wurz, meanwhile, jumped from eighth in the freshman rankings in the men's discus to second with a new personal best of 134-11 (41.13m). Wurz's mark represented a 13-foot improvement over his season-opening throw at the Rich Allen Classic on March 8. He now trails only Seth Henson, who set the freshman record at 139-00 (42.36m) in 2003.
Â
Noah Meucci led the Vikings overall in the men's discus, adding six inches to the personal best he set last week with a throw of 140-11 (42.95m).
Daniel Coppedge also bettered his seasonal best from last week by more than nine feet with a throw of 131-00 (39.93m).
Â
Elsewhere,
Amir Ahmed set a new overall best in the men's 400 meters with his finish in 50.28 seconds. The 400-meter personal best followed one in the 1,500 meters last night at the John Knight Twilight, as Ahmed set new marks on either side of his primary event – the 800 meters.
Â
The Vikings' women's 4x400-meter relay of Peterson,
Emma Stolte, López and
Ania Kapustka also set a new seasonal best while placing second overall in 4:04.47.
Â
The Vikings stay local for their next meet, as they head into the South Hills of Portland for the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
