SEATTLE, Wash. — It's good luck to say "rabbit, rabbit" on the first day of any month. But the Vikings ran like a bunch of rabbits Saturday as the Portland State track & field program wrapped up the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor facility.
Â
No one ran more like a rabbit than freshman
Nick Moore. The first-year runner broke the PSU freshman record in the mile with his finish in 4:16.04, bettering a 14-year-old mark that Zack Carpenter set at 4:16.56 in 2011.
Â
Moore's freshman record came with a heat win for the Viking. He was behind Salt Lake Community College's Samuel Nelson down the home stretch but surged past him over the final 10 meters to win by two-hundredths of a second. Moore's time also marked an eight-second improvement over the time he ran just two weeks earlier on the same track at the Mile City meet.
Â
Emma Stolte followed with a top 10 mark in the women's 800 meters. She narrowly missed out on the heat win but still finished in 2:14.55 to set a personal best by nearly five seconds and move up to eighth all-time in the event. She's only the third runner since 2016 to enter the top 10 in the indoor 800 meters.
Â
The Vikings got three other indoor bests out of the women's 800 meters.
Wendy Hare set a personal best by more than a second with her finish in 2:19.82.
Taylor Nichols destroyed the field in her heat, winning by more than four seconds while cracking 2:20 for the first time indoors or outdoors with her finish in 2:19.94.
Addison Capozzi also set an indoor best by five and a half seconds with her finish in 2:22.88.
Â
Nichols' heat win in the 800 followed another personal best in the mile earlier in the day. She finished in 5:10.86, six and a half seconds under the personal best she set just last week at the Portland Indoor 1. The biggest personal best of the day came from
Ania Kapustka in the mile, though. She shaved 33 seconds off the mile time she ran at last year's Big Sky Indoor Championships while finishing in 5:04.42. That put Kapustka just over three seconds behind the current No. 10 time of 5:01.17, which Kamila Bocian set in 2007.
Â
Another near-top 10 mark came from the Viking men's 4x400-meter relay. The foursome of
Miles Green,
Dillon Brost,
Amir Ahmed and
James Timmins finished in 3:25.35, setting a seasonal best by more than nine seconds, and putting them just five seconds off the current No. 10 time of 3:20.20 from 2005.
Â
Ahmed's part of the 4x400 relay came after he shaved more than a second off his personal best in the open 400 meters with his finish in 51.02 earlier in the day.
Â
Ashley Peterson shaved more than half a second off her indoor best on the women's side of the 400 meters, bettering a mark she set at the Spokane Invitational in December.
Â
All three Vikings in the men's 800 meters set indoor bests.
Abdinajib Abade shaved more than a second off his time with his finish in 1:55.18. Freshmen
Victor Ramirez and
Aidan Brown then shaved two and three seconds off their indoor bests in the 800, respectively, with their finishes in 2:03.43 and 2:04.02.
Â
Four of the nine Vikings in the men's and women's 60 meters bettered their marks.
Sienna Rosario finished four-hundredths of a second under her time from the Spokane Invitational, finishing in 8.11.
Dieumerci Migani and
Micah Avery led the Viking men in the 60 meters, finishing in 7.01 and 7.07 seconds, respectively. But the personal bests came from the next three Vikings between
Tommie Olubisi (7.17),
Jojo Clark Anderson (7.21) and
Ty Hawkins (7.25).
Â
Hawkins also set a personal best in the long jump. He jumped 21-06.00 (6.55m) on his third attempt of the day, setting an overall best in the event by close to five inches.
Â
Natalie Cunningham added another personal best from the field events. She bettered her mark in the weight throw by more than 28 inches with a mark of 40-11.75 (12.49m).
Â
The Vikings will return to The Podium in Spokane, Wash., for the Riverfront Invitational, Feb. 6-8.
