Vikings Prepare to Challenge Each Other for Couple Potential Records at Portland Indoor 1

PORTLAND, Ore. — It won't be an intra-city rivalry for the Portland State track & field team this weekend. It'll be an intra-team rivalry as the Vikings chase a few records amongst themselves at the Portland Indoor One.

Other teams will be present for the meet, which is split across Portland State's Viking Pavilion and University of Portland's Chiles Center. The throwing events will take place at Viking Pavilion Saturday. They'll be closed to the public due to the men's basketball game happening at the same time. However, Sunday's running events at the Chiles Center will be open to fans.

One of the records potentially on the line for the Vikings will be the men's weight throw. Five Vikings will compete for the record, with Daniel Coppedge and Noah Meucci figuring to be the front runners.

Coppedge has a better personal best than the current record. He threw 56-02.00 (17.11m) while competing unattached under the same circumstances as he'll compete Saturday at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet last November. But he has yet to match that in a PSU singlet. He threw 53-00.00 (16.15m) last Friday at the UW Preview in his first official meet for the Vikings. That moved him up to second in the event at Portland State, behind Jim Webster's current school record of 55-04.25 (16.87m) from 2003.

Meucci, meanwhile, improved his personal best to 49-00.75 (14.95m) last Friday. He heads into Saturday's event ranked fourth all-time at Portland State.

The Vikings will also send three different mixed 4x400-meter relay teams to the starting line Sunday. The Vikings only have one mixed relay on record, which came at last December's Spokane Invitational. Jojo Clark Anderson, Ashley Peterson, Amir Ahmed and Wendy Hare combined to run 3:46.69 at the meet, which instantly went down as the school record.

The mixed relay will close events Sunday, making for a potential dramatic finish as the Vikings' three entries all vie to beat that previous time.

Teammates have also passed the women's 600-meter record between them already this season. Wendy Hare initially broke a 17-year-old school record with her finish in 1:36.98 at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet. Irene Montoliu Tio then lowered that mark by more than three seconds with a finish in 1:33.75 last Friday at the UW Preview.

Neither of those two will run the 600 Sunday, however. Ahmeah Brown, Addison Capozzi, Sav Garcia and Peterson will run the event instead.

Hare and Montoliu Tio will focus on the 1,000 meters, which they'll run alongside teammates Campbell Faust and Irina López. The current school record in the women's 1k stands at 2:55.15, which Chelsie Jorgensen set in 2008. Ania Kapustka came as close as anyone has come to that record last Friday, as she moved up to second all-time with her finish in 2:56.97.

The Vikings will also have several entries in the men's 1,000 meters. None of those will be Abdi Ibrahim, who moved up to second all-time with his finish in 2:29.69 at the PSU vs. UP Dual Meet. Out of Sunday's entries, Amir Ahmed figures to have a chance to challenge for a top 10 mark at least. He shaved two seconds off his personal best in the 600 meters last Friday while moving up to third all-time in the event with his time of 1:20.85 at the UW Preview.

Jessie Fassler set the current men's 1k record at 2:28.06 in 2008. That also stands as the freshman record since Fassler was in his first year with the Vikings at the time. Freshmen Aidan Brown, Victor Ramirez, Nick Moore, Luis Muradas, Mika Sarver Huber and Simon Walsh will all chase top 10 marks in the freshman record book Sunday. Out of those, Moore ran the fastest mile time by a PSU freshman since 2016 with his finish in 4:24.32 at the Mile City meet last Saturday.

So, the Vikings have some motivation to use this weekend. Not just from other teams but their teammates as well.
