SALEM, Ore. - The Portland State cross country team returned to competition today at the 49th Charles Bowles Invitational, securing six top-100 finishes across the men's and women's teams, including two in the top 30.

The Viking men ran their first 8k of the season after opening with two 6k races. Similarly, the women tackled a 5k, having previously competed in two 4k events.Â

On the men's side, the Vikings finished 11th overall, with 11 athletes competing and two placing in the top 100.
Abdi Abade led the team, posting a personal best of 25:01.0 to secure 27th place.
Nick Moore followed with a time of 25:45.5, finishing 71st.
Luis Muradas, just 12 seconds shy of the top 100, rounded out the Vikings' top three finishers.

For the women,
Ania Kapustka led the way, placing 20th out of 216 runners with a time of 18:04.9. Freshman
Viola Alessandrini finished 63rd in her first collegiate 5k, clocking 19:02.5. Fellow freshman
Emily Schmitke placed 87th with a time of 19:23.01, while
Wendy Hare was the fourth Viking to crack the top 100, finishing in 19:26.9. With nine runners competing, the Vikings placed 10th overall in the team standings.

Portland State will be back in action next weekend at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., hosted at Pine Ridge Golf Club.
