CORVALLIS, Ore. — Having relinquished the steeplechase school record to teammate
Tatum Miller the night before,
Bára Stýblová didn't sit around and sulk. Instead, while doubling back in the 800 meters Saturday at the OSU High Performance Meet, Stýblová ran the fastest time by a Viking since 2013.
Stýblová placed second in her heat while finishing in 2:10.58, moving her up to fifth all time in the event at Portland State. No Viking has run a faster time in the women's 800 meters since
Bianca Martin – a current volunteer assistant for the Vikings – ran 2:09.73 in 2013.
The top 10 mark in the 800 is just the latest all-timer for Stýblová. In addition to now ranking fifth in the outdoor 800 meters, she also ranks second in the steeplechase and fifth in the 1,500 meters. Indoors, Stýblová ranks in the top 10 of the 800 (third), mile (fourth) and 3,000 meters (seventh). She was also part of the Vikings' record-breaking distance medley relay team that placed second at the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
But Stýblová wasn't alone in the 800 meters Friday. She may have posted the top time of the day, but the lone heat win for the Vikings came from
Natalia Martino, who won her heat in 2:13.74. Martino was second at the bell, but then moved past Eastern Oregon's Michelle Herbes with a faster final lap.
Martino was running her first 800-meter race outdoors for the Vikings. Her time represented a 10-second improvement over her prep personal best from 2021.
Sophie Jones,
Taylor Nichols and
Campbell Faust all set personal bests of their own in the women's 800 meters. Jones finished in 2:20.95, more than two seconds faster than her previous best, which she set at the season-opening L&C Spring Break Open on March 18. Nichols followed in 2:23.35 for a two-second improvement over her time at the L&C Spring Break Open. Faust finished in 2:26.54 to shave a tenth of a second off her prep personal best in the 800.
All three Vikings competing in the men's 800 meters shaved chunks off their times, as well.
Cam McChesney led the trio in 1:57.92, more than a second and a half faster than his previous best, which, like his female counterparts, came at the L&C Spring Break Open. McChesney ran a negative split en route to his personal best, going out in 60 seconds before closing in 57.9 seconds.
Pat Roos cracked two minutes for the first time in the 800 meters while finishing in 1:59.98. That's more than two seconds faster than his previous best, which also came at the L&C Spring Break Open.
Zach Salcido didn't set a personal best Saturday, but he did shave more than three seconds off his seasonal best while finishing in 2:00.63. Salcido's previous seasonal best came just two weeks ago at the Larry Byerly L&C Invite, making Saturday's improvement a significant jump in a short amount of time.
The Vikings also saw all three runners in the men's 100 meters set or tie their personal bests.
Travis West, one of the Portland State football players who also competes for the Vikings' track & field team, led the way with a time of 11.15 seconds. That was almost a half a second faster than West's previous best, which came at the season-opening L&C Spring Break Open.
Edward Niyongere, fresh off personal bests in the 200 meters and long jump Friday, added another to his weekend resume while finishing the 100 meters in 11.32 seconds. That was a half second faster than his time of 11.83 seconds two weeks ago when he made his Viking debut at the Larry Byerly L&C Invite.
Michael Jackson, a teammate of West's on the football team, tied his personal best while finishing in 11.64 seconds. That matched the time he ran at the L&C Spring Break Open.
Saturday's events concluded the OSU High Performance Meet, one of the team's final meets of the regular season. The Vikings will send a select few athletes to the Oregon Twilight on May 5, but will otherwise turn their attention to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 10-13, in Greeley, Colo.
