RESULTS

AZUSA, Calif. —
In less than a year in the Portland State track & field program, Bára Stýblová and Alex Barbour have rewritten the record books together. Coming into Saturday, they both ranked in the all-time top 10 at Portland State in the…

  • Cross country 6k (Barbour 2nd, Stýblová 4th)
  • Indoor mile (Barbour 2nd, Stýblová 4th)
  • Indoor 3k (Barbour 2nd, Stýblová 7th)
  • Outdoor 3k steeplechase (Stýblová 1st, Barbour 3rd)

Not to mention the women's DMR team that broke the school record during the indoor season with both Barbour and Stýblová running a leg.

You can add one more to that list after Saturday as the pair both set all-time top 10 marks in the women's 1,500 meters on the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Stýblová – two days after setting the school record in the steeplechase – led the pair again with a time of 4:26.58 in the invitational section of the race. That represents the best time by a Viking since Sarah Dean set the school record at 4:22.30 in 2014. It also moved Stýblová up to fifth all time at Portland State, while Barbour jumped to seventh after crossing the line in 4:30.04.

Tatum Miller has frequently joined Stýblová and Barbour in the top 10 this season. She ran in the Open A section of the 1,500 meters Saturday, and while she didn't quite make it into the top 10, she did set a six-second personal best while winning her heat in 4:33.18. Miller finished more than two and a half seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher in her heat, Boise State's Samantha Wood in 4:35.79, and six and a half seconds ahead of the No. 3 finisher, Biola's Grace Catena in 4:39.74.

Phoebe Brown and Cam McChesney posted matching two-second personal bests in the Open B sections of the women's and men's 1,500 meters earlier in the day. Brown opened the day for the Vikings with a personal best of 4:47.31. That followed a 15-second personal best in the steeplechase for Brown two days earlier in which she cracked 11 minutes for the first time in the event.

McChesney followed the personal best he set in the 5k a day earlier with a new standard of 3:54.35 in the 1,500 meters.

Natalia Martino joined Miller in the Open A section of the women's 1,500 meters and posted a time of 4:35.34. That would have been a seven-second personal best for Martino if she hadn't run 4:32.32 two weeks earlier at the Pacific Open.

All told, out of 14 entries at the Bryan Clay Invitational this weekend, the Vikings set 10 personal bests. That included a 4-for-4 day Friday, which included McChesney's personal best in the 5k.

The Vikings are set to return to California next weekend, as Jordan MacIntosh and Ben Drew are entered in the Payton Jordan Invitational on April 21-22.

PORTLAND, Ore. —
With the Portland State track & field team split across two meets a lot of weekends, it makes it easy for each group to inspire the other. Friday, the Vikings competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational went 4-for-4 on personal bests. So, what do the athletes competing at the Larry Byerly L&C Invite Saturday do to follow up? They responded with 13 outright personal bests as well as four more Portland State bests.

And while they couldn't match their teammates' perfect 1.000 batting average, the volume of personal bests should inspire their teammates competing down in California.

Six of seven Vikings running the women's 1,500 meters set personal bests Saturday at Eldon Fix Track. Laura Beghin led that group, as she won her heat by close to two seconds with her finish in 4:41.59. It continued a breakout season for Beghin, who has now shaved close to 30 seconds off her personal best in the 1,500 meters over her past two meets.

Taylor Nichols and Campbell Faust, meanwhile, added two more heat wins for the Vikings in the 1,500 meters. Nichols won the third heat of the race in 4:48.60 – 30 seconds faster than her best over 1,600 meters during her prep career. Faust, meanwhile, won the fourth heat of the race in 5:02.29, six seconds faster than her time at the same meet last year.

Outside of the heat winners, Sophie Jones – running in the same heat as Beghin – shaved a narrow 0.13 seconds off her own personal best while finishing in 4:47.69. Emma Owen set a four-second personal best in 4:53.13 while running in the same heat as Nichols, while Abby Donde set a seven-second personal best with her time of 5:05.65 in the same heat as Faust.

Abdi Ibrahim led the men's side of the 1,500 meters for the Vikings. He did so while posting the narrowest improvement of the day, as he beat his previous best by a tenth of a second with his finish in 4:04.37. Aiden Carlson then added a PSU best with his finish in 4:14.12.

Ibrahim doubled back in the 5k and added a PSU best in that event, as well. He finished in 14:55.50, bettering his best time as a PSU runner by two seconds.

Owen doubled back on the women's side of the 5k and shaved 24 seconds off her personal best with a finish in 18:06.20. Isa Swain led the Vikings in the women's 5k, as she shaved 90 seconds off their prep personal best while finishing in 17:49.62. Peyten Woodruff also ran her first-ever outdoor 5k as a Viking, finishing in 18:38.93.

Woodruff's standout moment came earlier in the day, when she posted the trifecta of a personal best, heat win, and all-time freshman mark in the women's 800 meters. Woodruff won her heat by close to two seconds while shaving five and a half seconds off her prep best in the 800 meters with her finish in 2:17.73. That moved her up to 10th all time in the freshman record book at Portland State.

The men's side of the 800 saw Pat Roos lead the Vikings with a finish in 2:02.56, while Zach Salcido followed with a seasonal best of 2:03.71. Stirling Marshall-Pryde then rounded out the crew with a personal best of 2:05.22.

Ahliah Nordstrom added two more PSU bests in the women's shot put and discus. She pushed her collegiate best in the discus out another four feet with a best throw of 122-09 (37.42m). She followed with a mark of 37-07.25 (11.46m) in the shot put, bettering a mark she set at the same facility four weeks earlier by close to three feet.

Weronika Stanczak contributed one final personal best in the women's 200 meters, as she shaved close to two-tenths of a second off a time she set two weeks ago at the Pacific Open. She was also close to her personal best in the 400 meters, finishing in 1:04.84.

Edward Niyongere, meanwhile, didn't better any marks Saturday, but that's only because he didn't have any marks to better. The sprinter made his Viking debut Saturday while running the 100 and 200 meters in 11.83 and 23.76 seconds, respectively.

PSU football players Kennedy Freeman and Dino Kahaulelio also returned to competition for the Vikings after debuting at the same facility four weeks ago. Freeman was just off his mark in the shot put from four weeks ago, finishing with a best mark of 41-07.75 (12.69m). Kahaulelio, meanwhile, topped out at 33-06.00 (10.21m).
