FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Spring in Oregon is like playing the lottery. Some days you get lucky with sun, some days you get nothing but wind, rain, and gray skies. Saturday, those weather changes got shrunk down to an hour-by-hour time frame.
 
As a result, some of the Portland State track & field team got good conditions, while some struggled through adverse conditions at the Pacific Open out at Hanson Stadium. One could easily discern who was who by the times/marks the Vikings put down.
 
Among the lucky ones, Natalia Martino posted a standout time in the women's 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:32.32 for a 10-second personal best that also moved up her up to 10th all time in the event at Portland State. Martino became only the second Viking to enter the top 10 of the women's 1,500 meters since 2014, joining Kaila Gibson from 2021. She narrowly missed out on an event win, too, as Courtney Klatt nipped her at the line by one-hundredth of a second.
 
Laura Beghin followed Martino with a 21-second personal best in the women's 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:48.24. Isa Swain finished two seconds back of Beghin in 4:48.24, shaving two second off their season-opening time two weeks ago at the L&C Spring Break Open.
 
Martino doubled back in the women's 5k later in the day, as she finished as the middle runner in a 1-2-3 finish for the Vikings. Portland State actually took five of the top six spots in the event, with Jamie Zamrin, Martino and Abi Swain leading the way at one, two and three, respectively. Zamrin won the event by 20 seconds over Martino, finishing in 17:09.46. Martino followed in 17:29.50, while Swain crossed in 17:40.43. Emma Owen and Abby Donde followed at fifth and sixth, respectively, finishing in 18:30.99 and 18.50.97. Swain and Owen set new personal bests with their times, while Martino was running her first outdoor 5k as a Viking.
 
Cam McChesney ran the same double as Martino, opening his day with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 meters before returning to the track for the men's 5k. McChesney shined in his second event of the day, placing second overall while cracking 15 minutes in the 5k for the first time with his finish in 14:55.74.
 
Phoebe Brown opened the day on the track for the Vikings with a 13-second personal best in the women's 3k steeplechase. Brown won the event by close to 80 seconds while finishing in 11:03.67, moving her past Mandy Peterson and Linnaea Kavulich in the PSU record book.
 
Weronika Stanczak provided another personal best for the Vikings, as she knocked a second off her season-opening time in the 400 meters two weeks ago while finishing in 1:04.62. The Vikings' women's 4x400-meter relay team also knocked close to a second off its season-opening time while placing second overall in 4:11.43.

Ahliah Nordstrom pushed her seasonal best in the discus to 118-06 (36.12m). 
 
The rest of the Vikings had tough times with the weather. Wendy Hare won the women's 800 meters, but did so in a much slower time (2:21.66) than she ran two weeks ago at the L&C Spring Break Open.
 
The Vikings will take next weekend off before returning to competition the following week across three events between the Mt. SAC Relays, the Bryan Clay Invitational and Larry Byerly L&C Invite.
