FARMINGTON, Utah — Last week began at urgent care for Portland State track & field runner
Emma Stolte as she was suffering from the flu. It ended with one school record, another top 10 mark, and the first Big Sky Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor of her career.
Â
Stolte received the Athlete of the Week honor Monday, making her the first Viking women honored during the outdoor season since Kaila Gibson in 2019.
Â
Stolte earned the honor after breaking the school record in the women's 1,500 meters Friday at the PNW Invite – just two days after her trip to urgent care. She set the record with a finish in 4:21.80, putting her a half-second under the old record of 4:22.30 that Sarah Dean set in 2014. It's the second school record of 2026 for Stolte, after she broke the indoor 800-meter record at the Inland Northwest Invitational on Jan. 31.
Â
Stolte set an outdoor best in the 800 meters the following day, finishing in 2:10.64. That moved her up to seventh all-time in the outdoor 800 at Portland State. Her indoor 800-meter record of 2:08.51 is under the current outdoor record of 2:09.01, making a third school record potentially in the cards for Stolte later in the season.
Â
Perhaps when she's recovered from the flu.
