CORVALLIS, Ore. — Saturday marked the first day of spring break at Portland State University. For the freshmen on the Vikings track & field team, it's their first college spring break experience. And yet, the Vikings' youth have already been more productive in one day than most of the rest of us ever were over spring break.
Â
The Vikings set seven freshman top 10 marks Saturday at the PNW Invite, including the second freshman record in as many days for
Jack Macdonald.
Â
Macdonald led the youthful feel for the Vikings with a time of 10.78 seconds in the 100 meters. That tied the freshman record that Jake Ovgard set in 2012, and also moved Macdonald into a tie for ninth all-time in the 100 meters. Macdonald bettered Ovgard's record in the 200 meters Friday, finishing in 21.46 seconds to lower the mark by close to four-tenths of a second.
Â
Emma Stolte, like Macdonald, followed up a strong showing Friday with another Saturday. Stolte – who has been battling the flu, going to urgent care as recently as Wednesday – broke the school record in the 1,500 meters Friday night, bettering a 12-year-old record with her finish in 4:21.80. She followed up with the No. 7 mark in the 800 meters Saturday, finishing in an outdoor best of 2:10.64.
Â
Stolte, despite her illness, pushed the pace early, leading at the bell after a 62-second opening lap. She finished third overall as well as the second collegiate runner.
Â
Stolte's time put her within 1.63 seconds of the current outdoor record of 2:09.01 that Melissa Owens set in 2007. Stolte set the indoor record at 2:08.51 at the end of January, making another record a distinct possibility, perhaps when she's gotten over the flu.
Â
Stolte was the rare veteran presence at the top of the results for the Vikings Saturday. Otherwise, it was Macdonald and the freshmen's day.
Â
Beckett Stolp joined Macdonald with a freshman top 10 mark in the 100 meters. Stolp finished in 10.97 seconds, shaving one-hundredth of a second off the mark he set last week and moving him into sole possession of fifth in the freshman record book.
Â
Hannah Butterfield set a freshman top 10 mark in the collegiate section of the women's 800 meters. While Stolte set her overall top 10 mark in the invitational section – and
Irina López followed with a personal best of 2:13.58, also in the invite – Butterfield finished fifth overall in the collegiate section in 2:16.86. Butterfield's time moved her up to ninth in the freshman top 10 while setting a personal best by a quarter of a second and a seasonal best by more than three seconds.
Â
The Vikings had a similar invitational vs. collegiate sectional split on the men's side of the 800 meters. Junior
Amir Ahmed placed third in the invitational section in 1:52.54, shaving close to three seconds off his season opener last week.
Â
Ari Smith beat him to the line in that season opener a week ago. Smith nearly pulled off another win Saturday, but couldn't quite pass Northwest Nazarene's Evan Bennett at the line in the collegiate section, finishing in 1:54.20 to Bennett's 1:54.18. Smith's time represented an improvement of close to a second over his time last week, however, and moved him up to eighth in the freshman top 10.
Â
JD Arthur also improved by close to a second while placing fifth in the collegiate section in 1:55.82. Arthur missed out on a freshman top 10 mark by only seven-hundredths of a second.
Â
Zach Payne (50.10) and
Norhan Abdel Halim (1:0121) set freshman marks in the men's and women's 400 meters.
Natalie Fisher moved up to fifth in the freshman top 10 in the women's shot put while setting an outdoor best with her mark of 38-11.75 (11.88m).
Â
Henry Glad, one of the Vikings' veterans, opened the day for the Vikings. He added six and a half feet to his opening mark last week, throwing 175-03 (53.43m) to win the first flight. Glad set the mark on his opening attempt of the day, while he had another attempt past his mark last week.
Â
Ocean Rideout also posted an improvement in the field for the Vikings. She placed fourth in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-00.50 (5.50m) on her final attempt of the day. That was an inch farther than the personal best she set last week at the LCC Open.
Â
Jackson Mathers set an outdoor best on the men's side of the long jump, posting a mark of 21-01.50 (6.44m). That was eight and a half inches better than his previous best outdoors, which he surpassed again in one of his other two marks. Mathers also set a personal best in the high jump Friday, clearing 6-04.75 (1.95m).
Â
Aidan Sweeney shaved three-tenths of a second off his seasonal best in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.44 seconds.
Â
The Vikings will be back in action next Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem. It'll make for a busy spring break for the Vikings. But nothing this young Viking team can't handle.
