PORTLAND, Ore. — Ordinarily, 400-meter sprinters crouch down, put their hands down on the ground, and fire out of the starting blocks.
But not everybody.
Chase Lovercheck didn't do it Sunday. An 800-meter runner usually, Lovercheck remained standing at the start of the 400 meters Sunday at the Portland Indoor Two. It's what he would do normally at the start of an 800-meter race, and yet, it worked. Despite the unorthodox start, Lovercheck still ran the program's No. 10 mark all time in the indoor 400 meters while winning the event by close to two seconds with his time of 49.72 seconds.
Don't count on Lovercheck's starting style revolutionizing the 400 like the Fosbury Flop in the high jump. But it did offer a glimpse into just how fast the Vikings' two-time All-Big Sky runner can be.
That speed has already seen Lovercheck move up to second all time in the 600 meters earlier this season, while he also jumped up to third in the 1,000 meters. Ironically, Lovercheck only ranks 10th in the indoor 800 meters – his strongest event – but the speed he showed Sunday could see him improve on that in the coming weeks.
The rest of the Vikings competing at the Portland Indoor Two couldn't match Lovercheck with an all-time top 10 mark. However,
Wendy Hare and
Aimee Mackenzie did match him with overall event wins in the women's 200 and 800 meters, respectively. Additionally,
Paul Beaven and
Emma Stolte may not have set all-time top 10 marks, but they did move into the freshman record book in the men's 3,000 and women's 800 meters, respectively.
Hare opened the day for the Vikings with her win in the 200 meters, finishing in 26.54 seconds. It was Hare's fourth event of the weekend, as well as her second 200-meter race. Hare ran her first 200 meters of the weekend in 26.17 seconds at the WSU Open.
Mackenzie, meanwhile, claimed the overall win in the women's 800 meters while setting a new overall personal best with her finish in 2:18.80. Mackenzie led a group of nine Vikings in the women's 800 meters, including Stolte, who moved up to ninth on the freshman list at Portland State with her finish in 2:20.32. That time was a second and a half faster than Stolte's time on the same track two weeks earlier at the Portland Indoor One.
Stolte's freshman classmate,
Peyten Woodruff, also bettered her overall best in the 800 meters with her finish in 2:22.82.
Laura Beghin and
Campbell Faust gave the Vikings two more personal bests in the women's 800 meters. Beghin shaved close to three seconds off the personal best she set two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor One with her finish in 2:23.75. Faust, meanwhile, beat her time from two weeks ago by more than four seconds, while also bettering her outdoor best in the 800 meters with her finish in 2:25.96.
Beaven, like Stolte, added his name to the freshman record books Sunday, doing so in the men's 3,000 meters. Beaven finished in 8:35.95, placing him second overall Sunday, and moving him up to third in the 3k in the freshman record book.
Jake Schulte, running in a different heat, didn't set an overall best in the 3k, but he did set a PSU best by more than 22 seconds with his time of 8:58.94.
Five other Vikings set personal bests Sunday. Out of those five, two came in the women's mile between
Natalia Martino and
Emma Owen. Martino placed second overall in the mile while bettering her indoor best in the 1,600 meters by close to 10 seconds with her finish in 5:07.89. Meanwhile, Owen's personal best brought tears to her eyes at the finish line, as she shaved six seconds off her previous best with her time of 5:22.27.
Weronika Stanczak and
Abby Donde gave the Viking women two more personal bests in the 400 and 3,000 meters, respectively. Stanczak shaved two seconds off her 400-meter time two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor One while finishing in 1:07.02. Donde dipped a second under her indoor best in the 3k with her finish in 11:10.40.
No one competing Sunday bettered an older personal best than
Pat Roos did in the men's 800 meters, however. Roos finished in 2:05.46, bettering a personal best he originally set in 2015.
It was a fitting ending to a busy weekend for the Vikings, as they competed on three straight days between the WSU Open and Portland Indoor Two. The Vikings will remain busy next weekend, as they head up to Seattle for the third time this season for the Husky Classic, Feb. 10-11.
