MOSCOW, Idaho — Alex Barbour out-dueled a runner from Montana State down the final straight to lead the Portland State women's Distance Medley Relay team to a second-place finish Friday, as Barbour and her teammates capped the second day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships with an all-conference finish for the Vikings.
The close finish continues a growing list of times Barbour has passed another runner down the home straight. She did the same thing in her heat of the 3,000 meters at the Husky Classic two weeks earlier, passing Oklahoma State's Emily Carter over the final 25 meters after Carter turned and looked back at her going into the final turn.
Friday may have been more satisfying, as her strong finish resulted in All-Big Sky honors not just for her, but teammates
Tatum Miller,
Wendy Hare and
Bára Stýblová. Together, their second-place finish ties the best ever by a PSU DMR team at the Big Sky indoor meet. The Vikings had only placed second once before, which came 11 years ago at the 2012 Big Sky Indoor Championships.
The Vikings finished in 11:36.81 Friday, just off the school record of 11:36.53 that the same foursome set at the UW Invitational on Jan. 27.
Miller opened the DMR for the Vikings with the 1,200-meter leg, before giving the baton off to Hare for the 400-meter leg. They both passed it off in fourth place, while Stýblová moved the Vikings up a spot over the 800-meter leg, giving the baton off to Barbour in third. The lead teams all bunched up early in the 1,600-meter leg, before Northern Arizona sprinted ahead for what turned into a five-second victory in 11:31.98. The more dramatic finish came from Barbour and Montana State's Lindsey Paulson's battle for second, which Barbour won over the final straightaway.
The Vikings didn't pick up any other team points Friday, but did see several personal bests come in the men's 5k and women's 800 meters.
Josh Jarpey led four Viking finishers in the men's 5k, placing 13th in 14:46.28. However, it was
Paul Beaven – two spots behind Jarpey at 15th – who provided the fireworks. Beaven's time of 14:49.26 beat the Portland State freshman record in the indoor 5k by eight seconds, while also moving him up to fifth all time in the event overall.
Alex Solberg added another personal best while placing 17th Friday in 14:55.27. Solberg shaved 20 seconds off the personal best he set two weeks earlier at the Husky Classic, while moving up to eighth all time at Portland State with his finish.
Meanwhile, the Vikings' first three finishers in the women's 800 meters all set personal bests.
Emma Stolte led the trio with a finish in 2:19.34, almost exactly a second faster than her time at the Portland Indoor Two on Feb. 5.
Laura Beghin and
Campbell Faust followed in 2:20.31 and 2:22.91, respectively, with both runners shaving three seconds off the personal bests they set at the Portland Indoor Two.
The Vikings will conclude the Big Sky Indoor Championships tomorrow, competing in the men's and women's mile, as well as the men's and women's 3k. Saturday's events open for the Vikings at 11:25 a.m. with the running of the men's mile.
