THE OPENING TIP
Portland State wraps up its road odyssey this Saturday at the University of Idaho as the Vikings seek their initial Big Sky Conference win of the 2022-23 campaign. PSU will be playing its fourth straight game on the road and sixth in the last seven outings. The game at Idaho will also be the 12th away from home in 16 contests this season.

After starting the season 5-4, PSU has lost five of six games over the recent stretch. The Vikings were downed at Eastern Washington on Thursday night, 92-80. That leaves them at 6-9 overall, 0-2 in the Big Sky.

Making PSU's schedule even more challenging this year has been the quality of opponents. Idaho, at 6-10 overall, will be the Vikings' first Division I foe this season to have a losing record at the time of the game.

All things considered, the Vikings have fared reasonably well. They have wins over Oregon State (twice), Air Force and California Baptist among others, and lead the Big Sky in scoring (78.8). PSU erased a 16-point deficit at Eastern Washington on Thursday and led for eight minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, the red-hot Eagles rallied behind 59% shooting to win their fifth game in a row and maintain first-place in the Big Sky Conference.

JR G Jorell Saterfield led the Vikings with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the game. JR F Hunter Woods poured in 15 points, and the Viking bench had another strong outing with 34 points and 14 rebounds.

When the Vikings and the Vandals meet on Saturday, the game figures to be a high-scoring affair as they are the top two scoring teams in the Big Sky. Idaho also leads in field goal percentage (.488), and the two teams shoot 75% from the free throw line. PSU has won each of the last two seasons at Idaho (79-68 last year) and is 4-4 all-time in Big Sky games in Moscow.

Idaho lost its fourth in a row on Thursday, 85-83 in overtime to Sacramento State. The Vandals got a 42-point, 12-rebound, four-assist, four-block, three-steal game out of junior center Isaac Jones. He will be a focus for the Viking defense as he leads the league in scoring (20.0), shooting (.707) and blocked shots (19).

Saturday's game with Idaho has a 2 p.m. start and can be seen on ESPN+.

COMING UP
The Vikings will have their Big Sky Conference home opener on Jan. 12 against Northern Arizona, then host Northern Colorado on Jan. 14. When PSU hosts NAU it will be the first home game in 26 days and only the second in 40 days. The NAU game starts a span of six of the next eight games at home for the Vikings.

Thievery on the basketball court was also prevalent during the Barret Peery and Tyler Geving coaching eras. In addition, PSU has had two individual steals leaders with JR F Hunter Woods leading this year. A look:

Season, steals per game
2015-16: 8.5

He has played in 120 career games... there are a handful of other active players at 1,000 career points and more than 600 assists, though none would reach 700 assists until at least late January based on current pace.
