THE OPENING TIP
With four straight victories, the Portland State basketball team is officially on a roll. The Vikings will take their momentum into one of the most challenging weeks of the season, playing at Montana State on Thursday and Montana on Saturday.
    Â
The Vikings (8-13, 6-7) continued their winning ways on Saturday with a 73-65 victory over Sacramento State. That made for four wins in a row, matching the longest winning streak of the 2020-21 season. Most notable for the Vikings has been a climb from ninth place into sixth place in the Big Sky Conference.
    Â
The last time PSU won more consecutive games was a six-game streak at the end of the 2019-20 campaign that was stopped when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
    Â
Getting a fifth win in a row won't be easy. The Vikings play MSU in Bozeman. The Bobcats (18-5,10-2) have the best overall record and are currently second in the Big Sky. They knocked off first-place Weber State last Saturday in Ogden, and have already beaten the Vikings (73-60) in Portland on Jan. 22.
    Â
That was a different Portland State team though. Since then, Head Coach
Jase Coburn has transitioned his team to a small-ball, up-tempo approach. Part of the change came about as a need to reverse the Vikings' fortunes, and part came about by a slew of injuries (seven different players have missed games due to injuries this season). Regardless of the reasons, the results have been there. After the Montana State game, the Vikings were averaging 67.7 points and shooting .402 from the field. Since that game, PSU has averaged 86.0 points and shot .479 from the field. During the winning streak, PSU has averaged 88.8 points, shot .492 from the field, and .480 from three-point range (making 11.8 per game).
    Â
Leading the Viking attack has been SR G
Ezekiel Alley, who had three straight season-high scoring performances last week with 22 points on Monday, 23 on Thursday, then 26 on Saturday. He has averaged 20.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals during the winning streak, with a shooting slash line of .519/.500/.800.
    Â
Montana State provides a particular challenge that includes superior size, a talented offense, and a defense that is holding opponents to the lowest shooting percentage in the league (.413).
    Â
The Bobcats are 8-1 at Worthington Arena. The Vikings are 4-6 on the road, with wins in their last two road outings at Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado (averaging 101.5 points in those two games).
    Â
Saturday's game at Montana (16-8, 9-4) features another Big Sky contender. The Grizzlies are 12-0 at home this season. They beat the Vikings 66-64 in Viking Pavilion on Jan. 20 in a game that went down to the wire.
    Â
Thursday's game is a 6 p.m. PT contest at Montana State. It can be seen on ESPN+. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.
Â
COMING UP
Saturday's game at Montana is a 6 p.m. PT tip off. PSU's next home game is Feb. 17 against Northern Arizona. All games can be seen on ESPN+.

TRAVEL WEARY
Portland State will be playing its sixth straight game in a different venue. The Vikings have been home, road, home, road, home and now road against Montana State. The Vikings played at home on Jan. 27 against Southern Utah, then flew to Northern Arizona for a Jan. 29 afternoon game (approx. 2,500 mile round trip, including a four-hour round trip drive to Flagstaff from Phoenix). After playing Northern Colorado at home on Monday, the Vikings flew to Northern Colorado for a Thursday game, then fly back for Saturday's game with Sacramento State (approx. another 2,500 miles round trip, including a two-hour round trip drive to Greeley from Denver). The Vikings then traveled approximately 750 to Bozeman.
Â
BATTERED AND BRUISED
Portland State has had a rough go of it health-wise this season. While the Vikings have been impacted by COVID-19 like virtually every other program in the country, they have also had a variety of injuries preventing them from fielding a full squad virtually every game this year. Hips, knees, fingers and non-COVID illnesses have all played a role in player availability.
- Just nine of 14 players were available to face Idaho on Jan. 24. That number increased to 11 players for four games, then just 10 on Thursday an Saturday.
- Only two players, SR F Khalid Thomas and SR G Ezekiel Alley, have been healthy enough to play in every game this season. Seven have missed games due to injuries.
- The Vikings have started 11 different players this season and had 10 different starting lineups.
- Head Coach Jase Coburn has started nine different lineups in the last 13 games.
Â
GRAND LARCENY
Remarkably, Portland State has led the Big Sky Conference in team steals per game for the past seven seasons. The same is true this year under first-year Head Coach
Jase Coburn, as the Vikings are currently averaging 9.2 steals per game. Thievery on the basketball court was also prevalent during the Barret Peery and Tyler Geving coaching eras. In addition, PSU has had two individual steals leaders. A look:

2016-17: 9.9, individual: Calaen Robinson, 2.35
