Vikings Extend Win Streak to Three Matches with 6-1 Win at Colorado College

BOX SCORE - PDF | HTML

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —
The Portland State men's tennis team cruised to its third straight win Friday, beating Colorado College 6-1 at Lifetime Fitness club.

The Vikings have now not lost in close to three weeks, as they last lost to the University of Portland on Feb. 14. A number of Vikings extended their own win streaks in Friday's match, too, as the Vikings (5-4) beat the Tigers (1-2) in five of the six singles matches, and all three doubles matches.

Senior Stuart Tierney and junior Ian Risenhoover and juniors Matt Pronesti and Wil Cochrane won 6-2 and 6-1 at their usual positions at line one and two, respectively, in doubles, while sophomore Ethan Lopez and junior Nate Chart won 6-2 in their debut together at line three.

The Vikings have now won the doubles point in three straight matches, as well as seven of their nine dual matches overall. Additionally, the Vikings are now 17-10 combined overall in doubles matches during the dual season, giving them a win percentage of .630 so far.

Meanwhile, in singles, the Vikings played a line up from their usual positions, as Tierney sat out after playing his last two matches at line one. The rest of the Vikings had little trouble playing a line up, however, as four of the team's players won in straight sets Friday.

Lopez beat the Tigers' Jason Gutierrez 6-2, 6-2 at line one for the Vikings, bringing Lopez's record at the position back up to .500 at 2-2. Lopez's win also gives him his third straight victory, as well as his sixth win in his past eight matches.

Junior Brent Wheeler, meanwhile, dropped only one game in winning his match at line three, as he beat the Tigers' Casey Shaw 6-1, 6-0. The win snapped a four-match losing streak for Wheeler, as he had been battling through a leg injury.

Risenhoover and Chart also won their matches at lines five and six, respectively, in straight sets. Risenhoover beat the Tigers' Taylor Delehanty 6-1, 6-2 at line five, giving him his second straight win after he started the dual season 0-6 in singles. Chart, meanwhile, beat the Tigers' Ben Bacher 6-3, 6-3 at line six, giving him his first win in a dual match since he beat Weber State's Dylan Hansel 6-3, 6-3 on March 16, 2014.

Additionally, Cochrane won his match in a match tiebreaker for the second straight match, beating the Tigers' Ross Sherman 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) at line four, less than a week after he beat North Dakota's Simon Danyluk by the same score on Feb. 28. Cochrane has come up big in a number of tight spots over his own three-match win streak, as his two wins in match tiebreakers followed his 7-6 (6), 7-5 win over Montana's Alexandr Rudenco that clinched the Vikings' dual win over the defending Big Sky champion Grizzlies on Feb. 21.

Four Vikings now hold win streaks of two matches or longer after Friday, while two of the team's three regular doubles teams also have two-match win streaks. Additionally, the Vikings' current three-match win streak as a team ties the team's longest win streak from last season, and ranks as the second-longest streak in program history.

The Vikings can extend that streak to a record-tying four matches with a win over Northern Colorado Saturday, as they return to Big Sky action against the Bears at 1 p.m. (MT) in Greeley, Colo. The Vikings have only won four matches in a row once before, when they won four straight matches from March 8 to March 20 in 2009.

A win over the Bears Saturday would also push the Vikings above .500 at 3-2 in Big Sky play. The Vikings have not been over .500 in conference play since 2010, when they started 3-1.

Match Notes: Friday's match against Colorado College was the first ever between the Vikings and the Tigers…The Vikings are 2-1 on the road this season after Friday's win, and are now 6-7 all-time on the road under head coach Toby Krauel.
