Vikings Close Regular Season in California with Tournament Spot at Stake

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team returns to action in California this week to close out its regular season, facing Sacramento State on Thursday, April 16 before taking on UC Davis on Friday, April 17.

Thursday's Big Sky finale will carry postseason implications for both the Vikings and the Hornets. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex. Friday's match at UC Davis is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

A win over Sacramento State (10-11, 1-5 BSC) would secure Portland State (6-13, 2-4 BSC) a spot in the Big Sky Tournament for the first time since 2021, guaranteeing at least the No. 6 seed with a chance to move as high as No. 4. A loss would eliminate the Vikings from contention, as only the top six teams in the final regular-season standings qualify for the tournament (April 23-25).

The Vikings last competed on April 5, closing out their home schedule with a dominant 6-1 win over Idaho. They secured the victory behind the doubles point and singles wins from Aarjun Pandit (No. 1), Maas Schotanus (No. 2), Luca Prino (No. 3), Ignacio Ruiz (No. 5) and Luke Lu (No. 6).

Ruiz and Pandit continue to lead the Vikings with seven singles wins apiece. Pandit also owns a team-high seven doubles wins, recently pairing with Schotanus at the No. 1 spot. After their first match went unfinished, the duo has posted back-to-back 6-4 wins over Idaho State and Idaho to improve to 2-0 on the top court.

Both of the Vikings' opponents this week enter on losing streaks. The Hornets have lost three straight, which includes back-to-back 5-2 losses to Idaho State and Montana State before a 7-0 loss to Montana. UC Davis is looking to snap a four-match losing streak, most recently falling to Hawai'i in Manoa last week.

Portland State has defeated Sacramento State just once in program history, with that lone win coming in 2015. Under head coach Vetu Mam, the Vikings have dropped two 4-3 decisions to the Hornets, including a narrow loss in 2025 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. A win over the Aggies would mark the first in program history, as the Vikings enter Friday's match 0-7 in the all-time series.
