Vikings Fall to Hornets, 5-2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Portland State men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Sacramento State on Thursday in their final regular-season conference match, eliminating the Vikings from Big Sky Tournament contention.

The Vikings dropped to 6-14 overall and finished 2-5 in Big Sky play, while Sacramento State moved to 11-11 overall and 2-5 in conference action. The Hornets' win pushed them ahead of the Vikings in the standings and secured a spot in the Big Sky Tournament later this month.

The Hornets secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Vikings got on the board with a straight-set win from Ignacio Ruiz at No. 5, as he defeated Sebastian Vlahos 6-2, 6-3. Sacramento State answered with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 to jump back ahead before clinching the match at No. 3, where Doni Gashi rallied past Luca Prino in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Luke Lu added the Vikings' second point of the day at No. 6, battling to a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 victory over Yoav Levy.

Maas Schotanus played Nick Bowles to the wire at No. 2 in the final match of the afternoon but couldn't pull out the win, falling 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2).

The Vikings will wrap up its 2026 season on Friday, April 17 at UC Davis (2:00pm).
