SCOUTING BOISE STATE: Boise State comes into play this weekend with a 2-4 overall record after losing to Montana 2-1 in double-overtime last Friday and defeating Idaho State 2-0 on Sunday. The Broncos have been outscored this season by a mark of 10-to-8. Kati Lucas and Rebe Wolverton lead the squad with two goals apiece. Their only other win of the season was a 2-0 decision over Eastern Washington on Aug. 28. Boise State has played two keepers this season with Liz Ruiz getting the bulk of the playing time. She has allowed eight goals in less than 500 minutes and has recorded 20 saves. She is 2-3-0 on the season with one shutout.

SCOUTING SEATTLE UNIVERSITY: The Redhawks come into this weekend with 4-2 record and a decisive 2-0 victory over then-No. 8 Portland. They have also tallied wins against Sacramento State, UC Davis and Idaho. Seattle has scored seven goals this season but have give up only five thanks to keeper Madison Goverde who has recorded three shutouts in nearly 550 minutes this season.

LAST TIME OUT: The Vikings are coming off a 2-0 weekend at the Wolf Pack Invitational where they defeated host team Nevada 2-0 and then defeated Detroit, also by a score of 2-0.

It was a closely fought match through a scoreless first half before Megan Martin broke the tie Friday night at Nevada. She received a pass from Melissa Trammell and then shot the ball from about 17-yards out for her first goal of the season.

Carlie Martin increased the Portland State advantage to 2-0 exactly two minutes and 20 seconds later when she advanced the ball forward from her defender position and blasted a shot from 25-yards out into the upper right corner of the net for her first-career goal.

Melissa Trammell got the Vikings on the board early with her third goal of the year in the 16th minute of the match Sunday against Detroit. Ariana Cooley started the attack with a pass into the box to Megan Martin who then one touched the ball to Trammell who knocked it home to give the Vikings the 1-0 lead.

Freshman Kayla Henningsen put the match out of reach when she advanced the ball up field and took a shot from 37-yards out that went off the crossbar and in for her second goal of the season.

TWIN KILLING: The match at Nevada marked the first time junior twins Carlie and Megan Martin have scored goals in the same game playing for Portland State. It is only the second time in their soccer careers that they have scored in the same game, the only other time was in high school playing for Oregon City. Megan Martin scored first with Carlie Martin scoring exactly two minutes and 20 seconds later.

KEEP THE MOMENTUM ROLLING: Sunday's win against Detroit marked the fourth straight win for the Vikings this season. It is the first time since the 2002 season that they have accomplished the feat.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Amanda Dutra and Esty Geiger were named the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively for the week of Aug. 22-28. It was the second honor for Dutra and the first for Geiger. Dutra recorded a goal and an assist over the weekend while Geiger played all 107-plus minutes and recorded an assist.

Junior transfer goalkeeper Melissa Ferguson was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29 through Sept. 4. She went a perfect 2-0 at the Wolf Pack Invitational posting shutout wins against Nevada and Detroit Mercy.

Ferguson tallied eight saves over the weekend and now has 20 saves on the season. She has posted a record of 4-0 since stepping into the starting lineup with three shutouts. She has allowed only one goal in over 411 minutes for a goals against average of 0.22 which leads the conference.

INJURY BUG: Sophomore Eryn Brown will be out the rest of the year after suffering a season-ending knee injury in an exhibition game against Miami (Fla.) on Aug. 14. Also out of for the season is senior midfielder Amanda Howie who suffered a foot injury.

SCHOTTING THE BREEZE: Vikings head coach Laura Schott is in her fourth season at the helm in 2011. With 28 wins under her belt, Schott is third all-time in career wins at Portland State and is within distance of setting a new mark this fall. Bernie Fagan (1993-96) and Tara Erickson (2001-2004) share PSU's record at 29 wins. Schott could tie or even break the record this weekend at the Viking Soccer Classic.

BIG SKY SUPERIORITY: The Vikings have been among the Big Sky Conference's elite the last three years, winning the regular season in 2009 and finishing as the runner-up in both 2008 and 2010.

KEEPING IT LOCAL ON THE PARK BLOCKS: Since taking over in 2008, Schott has increased the number of locals on the Vikings squad. As the number of Oregonians increases, so have the number of wins.

In 2008 there were four Oregonians on the squad that ended the season 5-11-4. In 2009 the win total increased to 10 wins with 10 Oregonians on the team. In 2010 the number of Oregonians increased to 11 and the team won nine games and a school best five games in conference play.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE: Portland State has two sets of twins on the 2011 roster in Carlie and Megan Martin and Kayla and Kelsey Henningsen.

PRESEASON COACHES' POLL: The Vikings were selected fourth in the 2011 Big Sky coaches' poll. Exceeding the expectations has been the Portland State motto under head coach Laura Schott. Portland State was picked to finish fifth in 2008 and 2009, but went on to finish second and first, respectively. The Vikings were then picked third in last year's preseason poll but went on to take second in the conference.

THE SHORTEST IN YEARS: Though Portland State has played two exhibitions in August, one against Concordia (Ore.) Aug. 10 and another against Miami (Fla.) Aug. 14 at Hillsboro Stadium, the Vikings will only play 17 regular-season games, the team's shortest regular-season schedule since 1995.

Portland State was in its last year as a Division II Independent and would go on to finish 9-5-2, before joining the Big Sky the following year. Millette DeSpain led the team with 12 goals and nine assists that year.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Once again, Vikings call Hillsboro Stadium home after playing seven-of-eight home contests at the facility last season. In 2011, Portland State will have seven regular season contests and one preseason match at the stadium.

THE PARK BLOCKS WORLD CUP CREDIBILITY: Freshman Daniela Solis, a three-time all-state selection at Sherwood High School, represented Mexico at the U17 Girls World Cup in 2010, hosted by Trinidad and Tobago. Solis made three appearances, two starts, and tallied the game-winning goal against the Republic of South Africa.

NEXT UP: Following this weekend's play at the Viking Soccer Classic, Portland State will head to the Bay Area where it will face off with San Francisco Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and San Jose State Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
