Fourth-Seeded Vikings Set Sights on Big Sky Tournament Run, Face Idaho Wednesday

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team heads to Missoula, Mont., this week for its fourth consecutive Big Sky Tournament appearance, aiming to bring the program's first-ever title back to the Rose City.

The fourth-seeded Vikings will face No. 5 Idaho in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 5—a chance to exact revenge on the team that eliminated them in the semifinals the past two seasons. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PT / 2:00 p.m. MT at South Campus Stadium, with the winner advancing to Friday's semifinals. All five tournament games will air on ESPN+, with live stats also available.

  • Series History: The Vikings trail the all-time series vs. Idaho, 7-15-1.
  • Postseason Matchups: Portland State is 0-2 against Idaho in postseason play, losing semifinal matches in 2023 (1-0) and 2024 (2-1).
  • 2025 Regular Season Meeting: The teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 19 at Hillsboro Stadium—the first tie in series history. Idaho's Sara Rodgers netted a header in the 3rd minute to give UI the lead before a penalty kick from Ocean Rideout leveled the match in the 62nd minute. The Vikings were limited to just five shots (two on goal) while Idaho had 10 (six on goal).
  • Scouting the Vandals: After reaching the Big Sky title game in 2024, the Vandals claimed the fifth seed in this year's tournament with a 2-2-4 conference record. They ended the regular season with draws against Portland State and Northern Colorado, followed by a loss to Northern Arizona, and are seeking their first win since Oct. 12 against Eastern Washington. Idaho led the conference with eight draws, four of them scoreless, and notched three multi-goal matches and three shutouts while allowing 11 goals in Big Sky play. Four Vandals earned all-conference honors on Tuesday, highlighted by first-team selections Izzy Thoma (defender) and Annika Farley (midfielder).

VIKINGS' BSC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Appearances: 16 (1997, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024)
  • Record: 4-13-4
  • Despite five regular-season Big Sky titles, the Vikings have never won a Big Sky Tournament championship, finishing as runners-up in 2002 and 2013.
  • Portland State has had recent success at the tournament, advancing to the semifinals in consecutive seasons:
    • 2023: Defeated #6 Idaho State 4-1 to reach the semifinals. Suffered 1-0 loss to Idaho in the semifinals. 
    • 2024: Advanced past #3 Eastern Washington in a 7-6 penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, earning the program's first-ever PK victory. Fell 2-1 to Idaho in the semifinals.
  • This will be Portland State's sixth postseason appearance (fourth consecutive) with Maureen Whitney on staff, and second with her as head coach
  • Whitney has helped the Vikings to a 2-3-1 tournament record in her time at PSU, going 0-1-1 as head coach.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS
  • Senior forward Ocean Rideout led the Vikings with 10 points during the regular season (4 goals, 2 assists), six of those points coming in conference action. 
  • Both Rideout and teammate Maya Wells tallied a goal and an assist in the Vikings' regular-season finale at Sacramento State (Oct. 26) — the only players to record three points in a game this season.
  • For the second straight season, sophomore forward Aliayha Saldana led the Vikings with 33 shots, averaging 2.25 per game against Big Sky opponents
DOMINANT DEFENSE 
  • The Vikings allowed only five goals in conference action, the second fewest in the Big Sky behind Montana (three)
  • Did not allow a multi-goal game during conference play
  • Gave up just one first-half goal across eight Big Sky matches
CUNNINGHAM iN COMMAND
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham was impressive during Big Sky play, allowing only five goals in eight matches, with three shutouts
  • Led the conference with an .894 save percentage in Big Sky action and ranked second in goals-against average (0.63) and saves per game (5.25)
  • She currently ranks third all-time in program history for career saves per game, averaging 4.93 across 29 appearances and 28 starts.
  • Her career totals include a 10-14-5 record, five shutouts, a 1.33 goals against average, and a .794 save percentage.

ANCHORING THE BACK LINE

  • Senior defenders Liv Frazier and Kalo Iongi have been a consistent presence on the Vikings' back line throughout their four-year careers at Portland State.
  • Frazier has appeared in 59 career matches with 44 starts, totaling 4,400 minutes.
  • Iongi has played in 68 career matches, starting 49, and has logged 5,097 total minutes — the most among all active Vikings.
O SO CLUTCH
  • Senior forward Ocean Rideout has established herself as one of the most clutch players in program history, with 6-of-10 career goals (60%) scored in the final 12 minutes of play.
  • Prior to her final two goals of the season, all five of Rideout's previous goals — spanning from her sophomore year to the present — occurred in the final 10 minutes of play, including two game-winners scored in the 89th minute.
  • 7 of her 10 career goals (70%) have come when PSU was tied or trailing, leading to four game-winners and three equalizers.
  • Rideout has scored in each of her four seasons at PSU, totaling 23 career points (10 goals, 3 assists).
  • Nine of her ten career goals have been scored at Hillsboro Stadium with her first career road goal coming in the regular season finale at Sacramento State (10/26)
WHITNEY AT THE HELM
  • Viking Head Coach Maureen Whitney is in her ninth season with the Vikings, but 2025 marks her first year as the program's solo head coach.
  • She joined the Portland State program in 2017 as an assistant coach under former Head Coach Katie Burton. After just one season, Whitney was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2018 campaign — a role she held for six seasons.
  • Ahead of the 2024 season, she was elevated to co-head coach, sharing leadership duties with Burton.
  • In January 2025, she assumed full leadership of the program, becoming the ninth head coach in Portland State history.
  • During her time at PSU, Whitney has helped guide the Vikings to five Big Sky Conference Tournament appearances, including three semifinal finishes (2017, 2023, 2024).
  • Thursday's match against Weber State will be her first Big Sky match as solo head coach

HOMEGROWN

  • 14 members of the Vikings' 2025 roster are from the state of Oregon. Of those, 11 hail from the Portland metro area.
  • Three Vikings — McKenna Eggleston, Gianlley Gargurevich, and Claire Masters — are from Tigard, Oregon, where they played together at Tigard High School under head coach Scott Eggleston (McKenna's father).
KEY RETURNERS 
  • Aliayha Saldana and Liv Frazier were both named to the 2025 Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team
  • Saldana had a standout freshman season for the Vikings in 2024, becoming the first player in program history to be named Big Sky Freshman of the Year. She also earned Second Team All-Conference honors as a forward, tallying three goals, two assists, and a Big Sky-best 3.28 shots per game.
  • Frazier was a First Team All-Big Sky selection in 2024 and helped power the Vikings to four shutouts and only 19 goals allowed — the program's fewest in a season since 2014.
  • 2024 Second Team All-Big Sky defender, Kalo Iongi is back for her senior season. In 2024 she tallied 32 shots with 13 on-goal and played a crucial role in the Vikings' defensive success.
  • Elle Frazier, a three-year starter for the Vikings and a 2024 Second Team All-Big Sky midfielder, will utilize her medical redshirt this season.

2025 BIG SKY PRESEASON POLL

  • The Vikings were picked eighth out of nine teams in the 2025 Big Sky preseason coaches' poll released on Monday, Aug. 11. They earned 22 points — well ahead of last-place Idaho State (10 points) and just behind Northern Colorado (26 points) and Weber State (27 points). Reigning regular-season champion Montana topped the poll with six first-place votes and a league-high 60 points.

2024 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Vikings finished the 2024 season with a 4-9-5 overall record, including a 2-3-3 mark in Big Sky play to place sixth and earn a third consecutive Big Sky Tournament berth.
  • Reached the Big Sky semifinals for the second straight year, advancing past Eastern Washington in a dramatic opening-round shootout by converting all 7 penalty kicks, before falling 2-1 to Idaho.
  • Five Vikings earned All-Big Sky honors, the program's most in a single season since 2014.
  • Posted four shutouts and held opponents to just 19 goals during the regular season, the program's lowest number since 2014.
