HILLSBORO, Ore. - A penalty kick in the 62nd minute dashed the Portland State women's soccer team's hopes for a Senior Day win on Thursday, as the Vikings fell 1-0 to Montana in their 2025 home finale at Hillsboro Stadium.
The victory clinched a third straight Big Sky regular-season title for the visiting Grizzlies, who improved to 11-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play. The Vikings, still looking to secure a spot in the upcoming Big Sky Tournament, will have one more chance to earn points on Sunday at Sacramento State. With today's loss, Portland State dropped to 3-8-4 overall and 2-3-2 in conference action.
The Vikings did everything they could defensively to stifle a potent Montana attack that entered Thursday with 28 goals on the season—second most in the Big Sky at 1.75 per game. Portland State's strong defensive effort held firm through the first half and beyond, but contact in the box in the 62nd minute changed that. Montana capitalized on the foul, converting the ensuing penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. The Vikings continued to battle, generating a trio of shot attempts in the final 28 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham came up with several key stops in goal for the Vikings, finishing her Senior Day performance with five saves. The Grizzlies outshot the Vikings 17-9 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Maya Wells led Portland State with three shot attempts, while Kalo Iongi and Bianca Potesta recorded the Vikings' only shots on goal in the match.
With several Big Sky matches still to be played this weekend, the Vikings' postseason fate remains in the balance as they head to Sacramento State on Sunday for their regular-season finale at 12 p.m.
