MIDWEEK RECAP

PSU hit the road to play at Gonzaga and Idaho and walked away with two losses. The Viks were blanked 1-0 at Gonzaga and quickly found themselves down 3-0 at Idaho until Kala Renard and Frankie Ross each scored a goal to bring the Vikings to within one. Still, the effort was too late in the contest and Portland State fell to the Vandals, 3-2.

ABOUT UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines own a 3-7-0 overall record in 2010, with a pair of wins over Southern Utah and a win over the Big Sky's Idaho State, 2-0, on Sept. 23. Nicole Spencer leads the team in scoring with four goals in 10 contests and has accounted for nearly 50 percent of the team's scoring so far (.444). Utah Valley has been outscored by its opponents, 20-9.

Much like the Vikings, the Wolverines have split time in net to a 70/30 percent. Lauren Sack has played the most significant minutes for UVU and owns a 2-4-0 record. Hailey Brown is 1-3-0 between the pipes this season.

ABOUT SEATTLE U
Overall, the Redhawks are 2-1 against Big Sky teams, coming off a 3-2 double overtime win against Sacramento State Sept. 26. SeattleU took on Utah Valley Wednesday afternoon in Seattle and defeated the Wolverines, 2-1.

Emma Levy is the leading scorer with four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points. In net, Madison Goverde has played all the minutes and owns a 1.13 goals against average. She's also recorded three shutouts and made 35 saves. However, her save percentage is .714.

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY
The Vikings just crossed the halfway point of the season with their match Tuesday afternoon at Idaho. Currently, the Viks are 4-6-0 after their 10 matches, but that doesn't spell disaster for the team.

Last year, Portland State reached its halfway mark after a match versus Oregon, a 2-0 loss in Eugene. At that point, the Viks were 4-5-1 but went on to finish atop the Big Sky with a 10-6-3 regular season record.

In 2004 when Portland State first staked claim to the Big Sky title, the team was 3-5-1 after nine matches in their 18 frames.

THE LADIES OF OCTOBER
In 2009, the Vikings went on a 6-2-1 terror, their best record in that month in program history. The record included a 4-1-2 mark in Big Sky play, to claim the conference crown and host the regular season championship.

In her two years as Head Coach, Laura Schott's squads have finished 10-3-4 in the month of October and outscored their opponents 24-12... Take that Reggie Jackson.

THE 20 CLUB
This weekend, Portland State Head Coach Laura Schott will be in pursuit of her 20th win at the helm of the Vikings. By accomplishing the feat, she will become only the third coach in program history to reach the exclusive mark.

ROSS IS BOSS

With her goal and assist last Sunday afternoon, senior Frankie Ross moved up the school's all-time points and assists list. She started the season tied for 10th in both categories and is now sixth in both goals and points, and tied for fourth in assists.

Category    No.    Rank    Leader
Goals          10      6th       23
Points         30      6th       57
Assists        10      t-4th    13

SPREADING THE WEALTH
In the Vikings 10 games this season, nine different players have scored goals for PSU, while 15 different players have registered points (either a goal, an assist or both) on the 28 women roster.

Kala Renard, Frankie Ross andMelissa Trammell lare tied for the team lead in goals with three each, while Ross also leads the team with three assists. Ross was second-team All-Big Sky selection a year ago and the Golden Boot Award winner in 2008.

ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES THE SCORING
For the first time against a pair of Division I opponents, the women's soccer team scored three goals in back-to-back games Aug. 27 and 29 against ULM and Albany.

The Viks last accomplished the feat Oct. 10 and 12, 1999 against Gonzaga, (L, 3-5) and Western Baptist, now Corban, (W, 5-1).

SCHOTT FOR THE STARS
Head Coach Laura Schott, reigning co-Big Sky Coach of the Year, passed predecessor Tim Bennett Aug. 29 on the Portland State all-time wins chart. She is now third all-time with 19 wins. Schott surpassed Bennett's 16 with her victory over Albany. Former coaches Bernie Fagen and Tara Erickson tie for first with 29 wins each.

CAPTAINS OF THE SHIP
As voted by the players of the defending Big Sky Champions, the Vikings have selected seniors Rachel Jarvis, Emily Rohde and junior Tish Wise as the captains of the 18th Vikings soccer team.

Wise, formerly Parsons, was a captain of last year's championship squad.

QUEST FOR THE CUP
Portland State has qualified for the Big Sky Tournament each of the last three seasons, an unprecented accomplishment for the program. However, the Vikings have never won the tournament and received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA College Cup.

In 2002, the Viks played Idaho State for the Big Sky Tournament Championship and lost 1-0 in overtime. It is PSU's only appearance in the championship game.
