PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Laura Schott

Entering her 10th year at the helm in 2017, Portland State head coach Laura Schott has turned the Viking soccer program into a perennial title contender in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings have won four Big Sky titles under Schott, and have finished second or better in the Big Sky during seven of the nine previous years she's coached the Vikings. Additionally, Schott has led the Vikings to a 44-21-11 record in Big Sky play over the past nine seasons, giving her a conference win percentage of .651.

Schott became the all-time wins leader at Portland State in just her fourth year at the helm, breaking the record with a 1-0 win over conference-rival Eastern Washington on Oct. 7, 2011. Schott currently stands 73-76-22 in her PSU career, with her 73 wins more than double that of any other coach in PSU history.

Schott and the 2016 Vikings had a bit of poor luck during the 2016 season, as three of their five conference losses came in overtime. The Vikings had a resurgent second half of the season, however, as they won three of their last four matches, and were in position for a spot in the Big Sky tournament before losing to second-place Sacramento State in their season finale.

The Vikings also made ESPN in 2016, after Breanne Chilton-Eddy's overtime game-winner against Weber State in the penultimate match of the season was named the #4 highlight on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays that night.

Schott also led Kristin Moyer and Katie Forsee to All-Big Sky first-team honors in 2016, while Maxine Nagramada and Krystal de Ramos earned All-Big Sky honorable mention.

Schott faced a rebuilding year in 2015, when the Vikings had 18 underclassmen on its 26-player roster. Injuries made things more difficult on Schott and the Vikings as well, leading to the team's 5-13-0 record overall and 3-7-0 record in Big Sky play.

In 2014, Schott led the Vikings to a 9-6-4 record and a second-place finish in the Big Sky at 6-2-2 in conference play in 2014. The Vikings broke the Big Sky record for longest unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win over Utah Valley at the beginning of the season, and stretched their record to 16 matches before losing to then-No. 21 California. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Plese was named the Big Sky Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season at the end of the year, while Plese, senior defender Kayla Henningsen and junior midfielder/forward Cori Bianchini were all named to the All-Big Sky first team.

Schott also led the Vikings to an historic year in 2013, as the Vikings completed their first unbeaten record in Big Sky play at 8-0-1. The Vikings also set program records for shutouts with 12 in 2013, and set a program record for team goals-against average at 0.76. Schott was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year after the season, her second conference coach of the year honor after she was named the co-coach of the year in 2009, when she led the Vikings to their first of four Big Sky titles (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013).

Schott has led several Viking players to their own individual awards as well, including 12 individual Big Sky honors between three Big Sky Golden Boot award winners (Frankie Ross in 2008; Dolly Enneking in 2009; Megan Martin in 2011), two Big Sky Offensive Most Valuable Players (Dolly Enneking in 2009; Megan Martin in 2011), two Big Sky Defensive Most Valuable Players (Cris Lewis in 2009; Kayla Henningsen in 2013), two Big Sky Scholar Athletes of the Year (Dolly Enneking in 2009; Frankie Ross in 2010), two Big Sky Goalkeeper of the Year (Caitlin Plese in 2013 and 2014) and one Big Sky Newcomer of the Year (Abbey Bergquist in 2013). Additionally, 57 of the program’s 108 All-Big Sky selections have come under Schott, including 16 of the program’s 33 first-team selections. Thirteen of the program’s 21 All-Big Sky Tournament selections have also come under Schott, as well as 34 of the program’s 60 Big Sky Player of the Week winners.

Academically, Frankie Ross became the program’s only NSCAA Scholar All-American with her third-team selection in 2010. Ross and Dolly Enneking also earned NSCAA Scholar All-West Region honors in 2009, with Enneking earning second-team honors and Ross making the third team. The Vikings had three players make the NSCAA Scholar All-West Region teams in 2014, as Plese (second team), Henningsen (third team) and Ariana Cooley (honorable mention) all earned the honor for the Vikings. Additionally, all five of the Vikings’ CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII selections have come under Schott, including Cooley who became the Vikings first two-time first-team selection in 2014. Besides Cooley, Nathalie Wollmann (first team) and Enneking (second team) each earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honors in 2009, while Cooley (first team), Kayla Henningsen (second team) and Kelsey Henningsen (second team) earned the honor in 2013. Cooley then followed as the Vikings’ only honoree in 2014. Schott has also led 10 or more players to Academic All-Big Sky selections in five of the past six seasons, including a record 13 honorees in 2014.

Schott’s influences stretches deep into the Vikings’ record book as well. Schott has coached the top two goalkeepers in program history in Plese and Cris Lewis. Plese and Lewis share the all-time shutout record at Portland State, while the two stand 1-2 in goalkeeper wins. Plese also finished her career in 2014 ranked second in career goals-against average and save percentage, behind only Melissa Ferguson, who Schott led to a record year in 2011.

Schott has also coached some of the best offensive players in program history, as five of the top 10 point leaders in Portland State history have played under Schott. Enneking graduated as the Vikings’ all-time leader in career goals and points, after leading the Vikings to the Big Sky regular-season title in 2009, Schott’s second year at Portland State. Overall, Portland State has had five players win the conference scoring title during Schott’s tenure, the most by any school in the Big Sky. Schott also coached the all-time assists leader, Amanda Dutra, who recorded 16 assists in her career from 2009-12.

Schott was a prolific scorer as a player herself, as she stands as the all-time leader in goals scored at California. Schott scored 56 goals in her Cal career, breaking the mark of 55 set by World Cup and U.S. Olympic veteran Joy Fawcett, and putting her ahead of current U.S. Women’s National Team member Alex Morgan, who scored 45 in her career.

Schott was a two-time All-American at Cal, and was a Hermann Trophy finalist in 2001. Additionally, Schott played with the U.S. Senior Women’s National Team at the 2001 Algarve Cup while she was still attending Cal. Schott earned five international caps at the Algarve Cup, making four starts and scoring a goal against Norway. Schott also played for the U.S. U-21 Nordic Cup Championship team in 2001.

After college, Schott won a national championship with the Washington Freedom of the WUSA in 2003. Schott then played for the California Storm of the WPSL in 2004, when she led the league in scoring and helped the team to the WPSL Championship.

As a prep player, Schott played locally for FC Portland and Jesuit High School, and won state titles every year she competed for each team. At Jesuit, Schott never lost a game while scoring 116 career goals and being named a two-time Oregon State Player of the Year and a high school All-American.

Schott became Portland State’s seventh head coach in program history on Feb. 22, 2008. Schott had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at PSU before taking over as the head coach. Schott initially came to the Park Blocks following the 2004 season to organize training sessions after the departure of former head coach Tara Erickson. During Schott’s three years as an assistant, Portland State went 9-9-2 in Big Sky matches and had 17 all-conference honorees, including four first team selections. Former Viking Juli Edwards was also named the Big Sky Defensive MVP two straight seasons in 2006 and 2007.

Outside of her duties at Portland State, Schott’s coached and directed club programs for all ages in northern California and Oregon at various times over the past 10 years. Schott also founded Viking Soccer LLC, and has coached ODP in Oregon and for Region IV.

Schott currently holds a USSF ‘B’ Coaching license and is involved in the U.S. Training Center in Portland. Additionally, Schott chairs the NSCAA Pacific Region Ranking Committee, and sits on the NCAA Pacific Regional Advisory Committee, which picks the NCAA at-large field for the Division I College Cup.

Schott was born April 4, 1981 in Portland, Ore. Schott graduated from California in 2004 with Bachelor of Science degrees in both political science and mass communications.
