Trailing 15-13 at halftime, the Vikings' DeShawn Shead picked up two third-period turnovers - an interception and a fumble recovery. The fumble resulted in a go-ahead touchdown for the Vikings when Drew Hubel hit Lavonte Kirven on a 22-yard touchdown pass on the next play. Brown tacked on a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to ensure the win.

VIKINGS HOST FINAL HOME GAME LOOKING FOR A WIN
Portland State will host its final home game of the year this Saturday, intent on ending a losing streak and sending a group of 11 seniors out on a positive note. The Vikings host Northern Colorado at Hillsboro Stadium in a 1:05 p.m. game that can be heard on Freedom 970 AM and www.970.am. The pregame show starts at noon. The game is also available via live video stream at www.b2tv.com. Live stats can be found at GoViks.com.

PSU is 2-7 this season and has lost five straight entering this week. The Vikings are 1-5 in Big Sky Conference play. Portland State does take a six-game winning streak over Northern Colorado into the game. PSU has won four straight Big Sky games over the Bears, including a 23-18 contest last year in snowy Greeley, CO.

Northern Colorado has been on a bigger downward spiral than the Vikings, losing seven games in a row after starting the year at 2-1. The Bears are 1-6 in Big Sky play and will be playing their final contest. UNC is 0-5 on the road this year.

A Portland State win would guarantee the Vikings no worse than seventh place in the league with a season finale game at Northern Arizona on Nov. 20.

SCOUTING NORTHERN COLORADO
Northern Colorado began the season with promise, winning two of its first three games, but has lost seven in a row since. At 2-8, the Bears are looking for their second three-win season in a row. They have not won more than three in a season since 2005.

UNC averages 343.9 yards per game on offense, including 224.9 yards passing. Quarterback Dylan Orms is 123 of 232 passing for 1,807 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. However, the Bears have given up a league-high 33 sacks.

Wide receiver Jace Davis has had a big year, catching 49 passes for 912 yards and seven touchdowns. He leads the Big Sky in receiving yards this year. Running mate Patrick Walker has 35 catches for 481 yards and five scores.

Running backs Andre Harris and Jhamele Robinson have combined for 953 rushing yards. Orms also has 378 positive rushing yards and five TDs.

Northern Colorado has given up 390.3 yards and 31.3 points per game on defense. The Bears have also forced 23 turnovers, including 16 fumbles. However, they rank last in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score on 87% of their trips inside the 20-yard line.

Defensive end John Eddy has made 84 tackles this season, has 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Safety Korey Askew has 55 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Northern Colorado ranks last in the league, making only 4-10 field goals this season and none since the second game of the season.

SENIOR DAY
A relatively young program, the Portland State football team has just 11 seniors playing in their final game this Saturday. Only four players who were in the original starting lineup this season are seniors. A twelfth senior, QB Drew Hubel, is taking a medical redshirt season and will return in 2011. Here are the Vikings' eleven seniors.

Ray Fry, WR, 5-8, 180, Everett, WA (Mariner HS/Idaho)
Fry has played three seasons in the Portland State program, but saw his senior year cut short by a broken bone in his thumb. Fry totaled 107 catches for 1,530 yards and five touchdowns in his career. In 2009, he led the Vikings with 67 catches for 904 yards and three touchdowns.

Tygue Howland, QB, 6-3, 220, Sedro-Woolley, WA (Sedro-Woolley)
Howland has overcome three major injuries in his college career and become one of the most respected players in the program. Now in his sixth season, Howland has played in just 15 games at quarterback because of those injuries and will start his sixth contest this week against Northern Colorado. Twice he has thrown for over 300 yards in a game and he has nearly 2,000 career yards despite limited playing time. Howland has also earned Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors.

Kevin Watts, RB, 5-9 190, Sacramento, CA (Valley/Sacramento CC)
As a junior, Watts played in three games as a defensive back and on special teams. He has been mainly a scout team running back his senior season.

Brian Walters, DE, 6-0, 220, Melbourne, FL (Melbourne/Mendocino CC)
An undersized defensive end, Walters has seen increased playing time this season due to his pass rush abilities. He has six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery this season after getting three tackles in limited action last year.

Kevin Takeno, LB, 5-11, 210, Salt Lake City, UT (Hillcrest/Lewis and Clark)
Takeno has taken on a larger role as a senior at backup linebacker and on special teams. He has eight tackles this season after making two last year in a limited role.

DJ Macarthy, LB , 6-0, 235, Merrillville, IN (Merrillville/Indiana State/Harper JC)
Macarthy is one of just four original starters this season who is a senior and he will be missed. He took over a starting role at outside linebacker late last year and has carried on his solid play during his senior season. Macarthy will be making his 12th straight start this Saturday. He ranks third on the team with 43 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two sacks.

Zach Dias, OL, 6-5, 290, Napa, CA (Vintage/Solano JC)
Injuries shortened the career of Dias who missed one year with a torn labrum and was knocked out this season after the third game. He had competed for a starting role this season and was slated to see action as a backup.

Julius Thomas, TE, 6-5, 240, Stockton, CA (Tokay)
Despite playing just one season for the Vikings, Thomas has made a big impact after completing a four-year basketball career. He ranks second on the team in receptions (24) and first in yards (401) and is considered an NFL prospect. Thomas played on two NCAA Tournament teams in basketball and was part of more victories (78) than any Viking in history.

Nick Hutter, WR, 5-11, 180, Mission Viejo, CA (Capistrano Valley/Saddleback JC)
Hutter took over as a starter this season and had become a go-to receiver in the Viking passing game. He caught 26 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns, including 15-264 in his last two games. However,  a separated shoulder against Eastern Washington has knocked him perhaps for the year.

Rory Richards, TE, 6-3, 225, Salem, OR (Sprague)
Originally a linebacker for the Vikings, Richards moved over the become the starting tight end the past two seasons. Richards has been an iron man playing in every game of his career - this will be his 43rd this Saturday - matched only by DT Travis Beckley. This season, Richards has nine catches for 67 yards.

Travis Beckley, DT, 6-4, 285, Eugene, OR (Thurston)
Beckley is one of just two Vikings to start every game the last three seasons (along with DeShawn Shead) until missing last week's game with injury at Sacramento State. He had played in every game of his career to that point (41). Beckley has 13 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery this year. For his career, Beckley has totaled 69 tackles and eight sacks.

FACTS, FIGURES AND CURIOSITIES
WINS AND LOSSES:
The Vikings are now 2-7 on the year, 1-5 in the Big Sky Conference. With one more win, they would improve on last year's 2-9 record… the Vikings have lost five games in a row, four in a row on the road and three straight to Sacramento State... PSU has won six straight games over Northern Colorado, including four in Big Sky Conference play… the Vikings are 1-2 at home, 1-5 on the road... PSU is 51-28 in home games since moving to the NCAA I level, 25-60 on the road.

CORY CRACKS A K: JR RB Cory McCaffrey posted a season-high 187 yards with one touchdown on 33 carries at Sacramento State. That performance continued his streak of seven consecutive 100-yard rushing games against FCS opponents. In addition, McCaffrey now has 1,049 rushing yards on the season, the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. He is the ninth Viking runner to reach 1,000 yards. McCaffrey averages 116.6 yards per game... even more impressive, McCaffrey has 168 carries for 1,009 yards and nine touchdowns against the seven FCS opponents (144.1)... in Big Sky only statistics, McCaffrey leads the league with a 148.8 yard per game average and nine touchdowns. He ranks second in rushing in all games (116.6)... McCaffrey's seven 100-yard games this year ranks in a tie for sixth all-time at Portland State.

WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR YOU:
SO K Zach Brown became Portland State's all-time leader in field goals made in just 20 games after making 3-3 against Sacramento State (40, 24, 44). Brown now has 33 career field goals, passing Mike Erickson's total of 32 (1985-88)... Brown has made 15-23 on the season, which ties for second-most in one year. Last season, he set the school record making 18-25. Of Brown's eight misses this year, four have come from over 52 yards... he was Big Sky Conference Player of the Week (9/4) after making three field goals against Arizona State (43, 53, 47), and earned the honor again after the win over UC Davis (9/11) with 4-5 field goals, 3 XPs and a two-point conversion for 17 points... Brown has won BSC honors four times in his two-season career... Brown's 53-yarder against ASU tied for the second-longest in Portland State history. With four 50+ yard field goals in his career, he has the most 50-yard field goals by a Viking... heading into the season, Brown was named to the Big Sky Conference preseason All-Conference team and named second team preseason All-America by The Sports Network. Brown comes off a freshman year (2009) in which he earned second team All-Big Sky honors... from Keizer's McNary High School, Brown is a perfect 41-41 on extra points in his career.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: With the injury to Connor Kavanaugh, SR QB Tygue Howland stepped into the quarterback role for the Vikings against Eastern Washington. It was his first significant playing time in a game still in question since starting against Montana on Nov. 8, 2008. Howland missed all of 2009 with a knee injury, then earned the backup role in 2010 after being given a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA (due to three season-ending injuries during his Viking career)... Howland accounted well for himself against the Eagles, but had to play from behind all night as eighth-ranked Eastern Washington dominated the Vikings, 50-17. Howland completed 28 of 55 passes for 323 yards and one interception. It was the second-biggest passing day of his career.. Howland made his first start of the season and the fifth of his career at Sacramento State. He completed 11-27 passes for 141 yards with no TDs or INTs. Howland also rushed 15 times for 29 yards. Minus sack yardage, he had 11 carries for 69 yards.

Howland's Career Statistics
2005: Redshirt
2006: 2 games, 1-4-1, 2 yards, 0 TD, torn ACL in third game vs. California
2007: 1 game, 12-24-0, 126 yards, 0 TD, started first game vs. McNeese State, suffered broken foot in 3rd quarter
2008: 7 games, 3 starts, 74-150-5, 1,111 yards, 5 TD
2009: missed season after suffering torn ACL
2010: 6 games (at QB), 1 start, 49-109-4, 575 yards, 0 TD, has played in every game as holder for place kicks
Total: 16 games, 5 starts (at QB), 136-287-10, 1,814 yards, 5 TD

QUARTERBACK NUMBERS DWINDLE: Portland State started the year with eight quarterbacks, but have seen those numbers dwindle. First, SO Nick Green moved from QB to safety because of the depth at the position and lack of depth at defensive back. Then, SR Drew Hubel had right shoulder surgery and is now redshirting the season. With the injury to Connor Kavanaugh's left hand, the Vikings are down to five QBs. Freshmen Josh Milhollin and Chad Dashnaw are slated to redshirt, although Milhollin traveled to Sacramento State as an emergency third quarterback. JR Justin Engstrom (one career start) is the backup. The Vikings also have SO Hank Taylor (has not played).

ESTABLISH THE RUN:
The Vikings continue to do well running the ball as they average 211.3 yards per game on the ground to lead the Big Sky Conference. Against FCS opponents that number skyrockets to 254.4 yards per game... the Vikings had 233 yards against Sacramento State and average a league-leading 254.0 yards in Big Sky Conference games.

MORE ABOUT THE RUN: With 1,902 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns through nine games, the Vikings have rushed for more yards than the last two seasons combined (22 games, 1,470 yards)... JR RB McCaffrey ranks second in the Big Sky in rushing (116.6 pg).

STRANGE BUT TRUE: The season-high 322 rushing yards on 48 carries by the Vikings against Weber State (Oct. 23) is exactly the total rushing yards the Vikings had during the entire 2008 season (on 186 carries).

FINISH THE DRIVE: Portland State moved the ball against Sacramento State, totaling 374 yards, but had trouble finishing drives. The Vikings were 4-16 on third down, and playing from behind the whole game, ran seven fourth-down plays, converting three. PSU was 3-4 in the redzone, but two of the three were field goals, and one trip - all the way to the Hornets' 11 - ultimately resulted in no points. The Vikings found the endzone only once in the game.

RED ZONE HELP?: The Vikings have moved the ball effectively all season, but have not had the best results in the red zone. PSU has converted 17 of 25 red zone trips into scores (68%), and only 11 of those have been touchdowns (44%). Those numbers rank seventh and eighth in the league, respectively. A better representation may be in the national statistics, where the Vikings rank 24th in total offense (398.4), but only 58th in scoring offense (23.7). Help may be on the way though, as Northern Colorado comes into the game ranking last in the Big Sky in red zone defense, allowing opponents to convert scores on 87% of their trips inside the 20-yard line, including 66% into touchdowns.

DEFENSE BOUNCES BACK:
After a tough two weeks, giving up 1,071 yards and 94 points in losses to Weber State and Eastern Washington, the Viking defense bounced back against Sacramento State. The Vikings gave up 196 yards through the first 25 minutes of the game, but after that did not allow positive yards until the fourth period. In all, the Vikings held Sacramento State to 308 yards of offense, 90 below their season average, and just 68 yards rushing... the Vikings have allowed five of nine opponents to run for 222 yards or more (with two of those being Pac-10 teams) this season. But, after the steady effort against Sacramento State, PSU has allowed just 264 yards COMBINED on the ground to Montana, UC Davis, Idaho State and Sacramento State... PSU is currently ninth in the Big Sky in rushing defense (213.2), total defense (439.2) and scoring defense (38.7).

Rushing Yards allowed per game
Arizona State: 242
UC Davis: 70
Oregon: 528
Idaho State: 3
Montana State: 326
Montana: 123
Weber State: 337
Eastern Washington: 222
Sacramento State: 68

MOVING AROUND BACK THERE: JR CB DeShawn Shead moved to safety for most of the second half against Sacramento State. JR FS Donte Almond also started the second half and SO CB Mike Williams came in to join JR CB David Ross. The moves paid dividends as PSU's defense was much tougher, allowing no yards in the third period and forcing four punts in the second half.

YOUNG BUT READY:
Portland State's offensive line should get a lion's share of the credit for the improved running game. PSU has totaled 1,902 rushing yards this year - already the most since the 2005 season for a Viking team. A truly impressive aspect of the line is its relative youth. JR LT Dustin Waldron and JR C Adam Kleffner are the veterans. Also starting are SO RT Kyle Ritt and SO RG Manuel Rojas. FR LG Mitch Gaulke and SO Nick Gale each have starts, as well as FR LG Alex Cosenza, who was knocked out with a knee injury after four games. SO Dalton Jasso and FR Mitchell Van Dyk have seen action as well.

PLAYING WITH A LEAD: For the last two weeks, the Vikings have not held a lead at any time. That is a big turnaround as the Vikings had taken a lead in every other game this year - except the loss to Oregon. PSU led Arizona State 3-0 early, led UC Davis for the entire final three periods, led Idaho State the entire game, led Montana State the entire first half until a late second-period field goal, led Montana for much of the third period and briefly in the fourth, and led Weber State virtually the entire game until midway through the fourth period.

MAKING A FRESH START:
18 different Vikings have been first-time starters this season... there were nine in game one at Arizona State: JR RB Cory McCaffrey, FR OL Alex Cosenza, SO WR Justin Monahan, SR WR Nick Hutter, JR DE Carl Sommer, JR DE Jack Forbes, JR DT Alika Vaiese, JR FS Manoa Latu and JR CB David Ross... FR DT Julious Moore started at UC Davis... SR TE Julius Thomas and SO WR Kalua Noa and SO OL Nick Gale had their first starts against the Ducks... FR OL Mitch Gaulke had his first start against Idaho State... against Montana State, SO DE Dereck Jester made his first start as a Viking... FR DE Bryant Long, FR RB Justin Lilley and JR LB Shane Melbo each made their first starts against Sacramento State.

ORSHAWANTE BRYANT HIGHLIGHTS HALL OF FAME GROUP: The Portland State Athletics Department will induct six new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Nov. 14. Highlighting the group is former Viking wide receiver Orshawante Bryant (1997-2000). Part of the extremely talented, first Division I recruiting class of 1996, Bryant lived up to the billing, setting 10 PSU records as a wide receiver and kick returner. He is still Portland State's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,449) and receptions (223). Bryant was also a talented kick return man who shares the school record for average in a season (29.4). He ranks fourth all-time at Portland State in all-purpose yards (5,428). Bryant was a three-time All-Big Sky Conference selection who twice led the conference in receiving yards. He also was a star on the first Viking team to reach the Division I playoffs (2000) before going on to a long career in the Arena Football League... the six former Viking athletes represent six different sports and are equally divided among men and women. Four of those inducted earned All-American honors in their respective sports, and five competed in NCAA national championship competitions while at Portland State. Also set to be inducted are: Chuck Seal (Wrestling, 1966-69), Karen Strong (Women's Basketball, 1975-77), Shelley Rumberger (Volleyball, 1985-88), Cynthia Macom (Softball, 1988-91), and Matt Mandigo (Golf, 1990-93).

SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL
DOWNTOWN ZACH BROWN:
The Vikings' SO K has proven to have leg that can score from downtown. He made 3-3 field goals in the season-opening loss to Arizona State (9/4), hitting from 42, 53 and 47 yards. For his effort, Brown was named Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time in his career... after making 4-5 field goals in a win at UC Davis (9/11), three extra points and a two-point conversion, Brown earned Player of the Week honors again - his fourth such honor in 13 career games.

WELCOME TO THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE: Portland State gave future Big Sky member (2012) UC Davis a rude welcome, beating the Aggies, 41-33 (9/11), in Davis. JR QB Connor Kavanaugh had 234 yards of total offense and four different players scored touchdowns. SO K Zach Brown made four field goals, three extra points and a two-point conversion for 17 points. JR RB Cory McCaffrey punctuated his first 100-yard game (116) with a 40-yard touchdown run in the third period. The Viking was the first in the career of new Head Coach Nigel Burton.

DYNAMIC DUO: JR QB Connor Kavanaugh and JR RB Cory McCaffrey were a dynamic rushing duo in the Vikings' 38-3 win over Idaho State (10/2). McCaffrey had a career-high 166 yards on 24 carries. Kavanaugh totaled a career-high 125 yards on 15 carries. Each player had a touchdown. Kavanaugh had 341 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns. McCaffrey (with three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown) had 201 total yards and two touchdowns.

NOT IN OUR HOUSE: The Viking defense kept Idaho State out of the “house” in a 38-3 win (10/2). It marked the first time PSU had now allowed a touchdown in 40 games, dating back to the Tim Walsh era. ISU had just 195 yards of offense and two turnovers... JR FS Manoa Latu made six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, broke up two passes and returned an interception for touchdown in the game. He was named Big Sky Conference co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.

100 x 7:
JR RB Cory McCaffrey has played against seven NCAA I FCS teams this year and rushed for at least 100 yards against each team. McCaffrey has 116 against UC Davis, 166 against Idaho State, 154 against Montana State, 109 against Montana, 178 at Weber State, 100 against Eastern Washington and a career-high 187 against Sacramento State. He has 1,009 yards in those seven games (148.1 avg).

4 X 100: The Vikings may not have beaten Weber State (10/23), but the offense certainly rolled over the Wildcats, going for a season-high 600 yards.
