PORTLAND, Ore. — It was a day to be Super at the Portland Indoor 2 Sunday at the Chiles Center. With fans dressed in Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots jerseys ahead of Super Bowl LX, the Portland State track & field program took the charged atmosphere and ran with it. Literally.
Â
Ari Smith led a group of 10 heat winners for the Vikings with an overall win in the men's mile. Smith was also one of seven freshmen to set a freshman top 10 mark Sunday.
Savannah Beasley and
Irina López, meanwhile, posted overall top 10 marks in the women's 300 and 600 meters as both placed second in their respective events.
Â
Smith's win in the mile came over a group of fellow Vikings at the front of the race. He out-kicked them all over the final lap, finishing in a personal-best time of 4:17.21. That's two seconds faster than Smith's season opener at the UW Preview, moving him up to third in the freshman top 10 in the mile. He trails teammate
Nick Moore's freshman record in the mile, set last season, by only 1.17 seconds.
Â
Farhan Ibrahim led Smith through parts of the mile. He finished third in the end with a five-second personal best of 4:18.77. That moved Ibrahim up to fifth in the freshman top 10.
Â
Landen Sandoval also set a personal best in the second heat of the men's mile. Sandoval finished six and a half seconds under the time he set just two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor 1 with a time of 4:39.62.
Â
Beasley was one of the first Vikings on the track Sunday in the women's 300 meters. She ran in a later heat, but still finished second overall in 42.52 seconds, moving her up to seventh all-time at the distance in the process.
Â
Beasley led a group of Vikings that won three of the four heats in which they competed in the women's 300 meters. Besides Beasley,
Ocean Rideout won her heat while shaving more than two and a half seconds off a two-year-old personal best with her finish in 44.09 seconds.
Lydia Medina was the other winner for the Vikings, finishing in 44.28 seconds.
Â
Medina was also one of three Vikings to enter the freshman top 10 in the 300 meters.
Hannah Butterfield, who finished in 44.09 seconds while running in the same heat as Beasley, moved up to fourth in the freshman top 10. Medina, meanwhile, moved up to fifth, while
Norhan Abdel Halim moved up to seventh with her finish in 45.17 seconds.
Â
The Viking men won all three heats in which they competed in the 300 meters.
Phoenix Bakkum led the group with a third-overall finish in 38.22 seconds. Freshman
Beckett Stolp added a second heat win in 38.69 seconds, moving him up to ninth in the freshman top 10. Fellow freshman
Carson Schall was in a heat by himself but still won it –
thankfully – in 39.67 seconds.
Â
López ran to win in the women's 600 meters. A photo finish between her and Portland's Giana Atkinson ultimately went against her, but she still shaved four-tenths of a second off her personal best with a finish in 1:37.14. That moved López up to third all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Irene Montoliu Tio – the school record holder in the women's 600 meters – ran in the same heat as López. She's still working her way back into shape after an injury but opened her season with a time of 1:41.01.
Â
JD Arthur added a freshman top 10 mark on the men's side of the 600 meters. Arthur shaved six and a half seconds off the time he set two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor 1 while moving up to sixth in the freshman top 10 with his time of 1:26.24.
Â
Ian Parks recorded perhaps the most dramatic win of the day for the Vikings in the men's 800 meters. He trailed Lewis & Clark's Quinn Higgins by a couple meters entering the home stretch – and it's not a long home stretch at the Chiles Center – but gritted his teeth to win his heat in 2:01.32 to Higgins' 2:01.38. Parks' time placed him second overall while also marking an overall best in the 800 by 3.4 seconds.
Â
Aidan Brown set an indoor best in the 800 with his finish in 2:02.72, placing him fifth overall. Freshman
Jorge Garcia shaved close to four seconds off his seasonal opener in the 800 two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor 1, finishing in 2:04.27.
Â
Shayda Zarrin and
Emily Schmitke capped the day for the Viking women with a pair of seasonal bests in the mile. Zarrin shaved more than four seconds off her time from a week ago at the Inland Northwest Invitational while finishing fifth overall in 5:23.43. Schmitke, meanwhile, shaved more than five seconds off her previous best this season with her finish in 5:35.20.
Â
The Vikings head back to the Dempsey Indoor Facility next week for the Husky Classic, Feb. 13-14. It'll be a Seattle either reveling in glory or licking its wounds after Super Bowl LX. The fans wearing jerseys at Sunday's Portland Indoor 2 will be eager to see which way it goes in a couple of hours.
